From running out of bonus bucks to watching that once wonderful refund check dwindle, many are likely looking for ways to save money to make it until starting back up at a summer job. This week’s recipe is for those people.</p> <p>After spending a sizable amount of money on some of these recipes throughout the semester, I wanted to find something I could make that would be filling, utilize some of the things I already had, and include mostly cheap ingredients. This led me to a <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/robert-irvine/red-beans-and-rice-recipe.html" target="_blank">red beans and rice recipe</a>.</p> <p>One of the main things I have learned from trying to cook for myself is that beans are both economical and nutritious. A can of beans is less than a dollar, and when put into a rice dish, quesadilla, or salad, each can will stretch to several servings. The protein they offer means that whatever dish it is that they are in is much more filling, too.</p> <p>All I had to buy for this recipe was a bell pepper, a red onion, and two cans of beans, as I already had rice and all of the necessary spices and such involved. This recipe yields a lot, too. I had a big bowl of this last night and still have a pretty large Tupperware container in the fridge full of the stuff. It is going to feed me all weekend and is another recipe to add to my meal-planning arsenal. Though, the jury is still out on whether I will ever actually have my life together enough to follow through with planning my meals. Who knows.</p> <p>I honestly used the recipe I found as more of a guide than a bible. I’m not a huge celery fan, so I omitted it, and I used brown rice instead of white. I also probably used more hot sauce than was advised because I like some extra spice. Next time I make this I will likely add some chopped pickled jalapeños as well. Also, the recipe was unclear on whether the beans should be drained, so I kind of halfway drained them. It was still a little liquid-y at the end, so it really depends on personal preference. Next time I will probably drain them a little better.</p> <p>This recipe was quick, easy, cheap, and really satisfying. 10/10 would recommend. You can find it below.</p> <p>Next week will be my final recipe column, so if there are any requests, let me know ASAP by emailing me at tlwhiteman0@frostburg.edu.</p> <figure id="attachment_7124" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7124" style="width: 1014px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-7124"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="7124" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-cheap-and-easy/img_1297/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1461872914","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"250","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="IMG_1297" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Finished product!</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-large wp-image-7124" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-1024x768.jpg" alt="Finished product!" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1297-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-7124" class="wp-caption-text">Finished product!</figcaption></figure> <p>RECIPE (from Robert Irvine at <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/robert-irvine/red-beans-and-rice-recipe.html" target="_blank">foodnetwork.com</a>):</p> <p>Ingredients:</p> <ul> <li>1 tablespoon olive oil</li> <li>2 large cloves garlic, lightly crushed with the side of a knife blade and minced</li> <li>1 large red onion, diced</li> <li>1 stalk celery, diced</li> <li>1 green bell pepper, stem and seeds removed and small diced</li> <li>2 (1-pound) cans red kidney beans</li> <li>1 teaspoon onion powder</li> <li>1 teaspoon salt</li> <li>1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper</li> <li>1 tablespoon hot sauce</li> <li>2 1/2 cups chicken stock</li> <li>1 cup white rice</li> <li>1 tablespoon butter</li> <li>1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro leaves</li> </ul> <p>Directions:</p> <p>Heat olive oil over medium-high heat in a large saucepan. Perry Smith Studio Theater in Frostburg State University’s Performing Arts Center was the setting for a fittingly intimate and hilariously self-aware production of “[title of show],” an original Broadway musical. FSU’s production of the musical ran from April 15 to 23. The show features music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and a book by Hunter Bell.</p> <p>“[title of show]” is a musical about two starving artists, Jeff and Hunter, trying to write a musical. Jeff was played by freshman theatre major Matthan Potts, while Hunter was portrayed by senior theatre major Josh Mooney.</p> <p>Though technically secondary characters, Susan and Heidi contributed some of the most charming and comedic moments of the show, playing off of each other wonderfully. Sophomore theatre major Alex Hemphill and senior theatre and dance major Maddie Bohrer portrayed Susan and Heidi respectively.</p> <figure id="attachment_7053" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7053" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-7053"><img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="7053" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/title-of-show-delights-audiences-with-meta-humor/title-of-show5/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5.jpg" data-orig-size="2048,1365" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="title of show5" data-image-description="<p>Image courtesy of Kim Lartz</p> " data-image-caption="<p>Alex Hemphill performs as Susan in <h3 class='vw-title-shortcode'><span></span></h3></p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-7053" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-300x200.jpg" alt="Alex Hemphill performs as Susan in <h3 class='vw-title-shortcode'><span></span></h3>" width="300" height="200" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5-750x500.jpg 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show5.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-7053" class="wp-caption-text">Alex Hemphill performs as Susan in [title of show]</figcaption></figure>The chemistry of the cast was thoroughly impressive, though that may have had something to do with the performance being on the production’s closing night. Each actor possessed superb comedic timing, garnering laughter throughout the show despite quite a few obscure theatre references being dropped.</p> <p>Usually when one goes to see a stage production, the intent of the cast and crew is to fully immerse the audience and make them forget that they are watching a show. This production completely shattered that expectation, without losing the audience for a second.</p> <p>The show begins with a race against time, in which Jeff and Hunter have only three weeks to write an original musical to submit to the New York Musical Theatre Festival. In an extremely meta fashion, the musical seems to unfold as if it is being written and performed simultaneously. The creative duo surrounds themselves with a small team of fellow struggling artists to assist in achieving their goal, with the addition of ensemble cast members Jasmine Proctor, Kenny Waters, and Erienne McEldowney.</p> <p>In a previous interview with The Bottom Line, the show’s director Mairzy Yost-Rushton expressed that she likes “that it breaks the “rules”—characters ignore the fourth wall, ignore time and space, and are often irreverent and self-referential in very funny ways.” This certainly rang true. Hunter, the “writer” of the musical, would often just declare a scene over, or insert a dream sequence in the place of what could have been a more appropriate and natural transition.</p> <p>The musical gets to the heart of conflicts that creatives in any field, not just theatre, are sure to face. It addresses insecurity, criticism, and self-censorship for the sake of an audience that does not yet exist. These internal conflicts quickly translate into external ones, and the cast eventually becomes divided over creative decisions. In many ways, this show is an outline of the creative process: messy, candid, and often quite vulgar.</p> <p>Despite, or perhaps because of its unconventional format, the production was both highly relatable and entertaining. “[title of show]” did an excellent job showcasing the talent that exists within FSU’s theatre department, both young and veteran.</p> <p>The Department of Theatre and Dance’s final production of their 2015-2016 season will be the Spring Dance Concert, which will take place May 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. To order tickets, call the Theatre and Dance box office at 301.687.7462.</p> <figure id="attachment_7052" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7052" style="width: 1014px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-7052"><img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="7052" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/title-of-show-delights-audiences-with-meta-humor/title-of-show4/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4.jpg" data-orig-size="2048,1365" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="title of show4" data-image-description="<p>Image courtesy of Kim Lartz</p> " data-image-caption="<p>Alex Hemphill, Josh Mooney, Matthan Potts, and Maddie Bohrer as Susan, Hunter, Jeff, and Heidi in <h3 class='vw-title-shortcode'><span></span></h3></p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-large wp-image-7052" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-1024x683.jpg" alt="Alex Hemphill, Josh Mooney, Matthan Potts, and Maddie Bohrer as Susan, Hunter, Jeff, and Heidi in <h3 class='vw-title-shortcode'><span></span></h3>" width="1024" height="683" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4-750x500.jpg 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/title-of-show4.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-7052" class="wp-caption-text">Alex Hemphill, Josh Mooney, Matthan Potts, and Maddie Bohrer as Susan, Hunter, Jeff, and Heidi in [title of show]</figcaption></figure><em> All images courtesy of Kim Lartz.</em></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://thebottomlinenews.com/title-of-show-delights-audiences-with-meta-humor/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>1</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">7041</post-id> </item> <item> <title>Taylor Tries to Cook: Meal Planning</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-meal-planning/</link> <comments>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-meal-planning/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Taylor Whiteman]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Fri, 15 Apr 2016 20:38:42 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Food]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=6875</guid> <description><![CDATA[I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of meal planning. It would be so nice to be able to just grab a pre-made, healthy meal through the week instead of resorting to Hot Pockets or Chick-Fil-A like I normally do. Unfortunately, I do not have my life together enough to be proactive and make all of my lunches for the week. If you’ve ever taken a morning class with me, you know that it’s all I can do to get out of bed and show up some mornings. It really just sounded like too much work for me to ever give it a shot.</p> <figure id="attachment_6877" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6877" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6877"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6877" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-meal-planning/dsc_0424/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424.jpg" data-orig-size="6000,4000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1460576589","copyright":"","focal_length":"35","iso":"360","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0424" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The cut up chicken in the spice marinade!</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6877" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-300x200.jpg" alt="The cut up chicken in the spice marinade!" width="300" height="200" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0424-750x500.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6877" class="wp-caption-text">The cut up chicken in the spice marinade!</figcaption></figure> <p>However, I wanted to see how hard it would really be to make something yummy that I could easily eat off of for a few days. And it honestly was not that bad. I found this recipe for the chicken bowls that I made on a website called <a href="http://www.budgetbytes.com/" target="_blank">Budget Bytes</a>, which I will definitely be referring to in the future. They list the cost of each ingredient listed in their recipes, perfect for college students or recent grads on a budget.</p> <p>While I already had some of the necessary spices before, I had to purchase many of them which made this a little pricy up front. But it is helping me build up a pantry full of things I can use for a long time, and now I have all the spices needed to easily make this again. One of the best things about writing this column every week is that I now actually have things in my kitchen to cook with.</p> <p>I put the rice on first, which just had to be brought to a boil and then left to simmer in some chicken broth for about a half hour. Then I made the sweet and spicy marinade for the chicken and tossed the chicken in it, putting it in the fridge to marinate while I prepped the pineapple, black beans, green onions, and avocado. Last I cooked the chicken for about 7 minutes in a large skillet. I would also make extra of the sauce to drizzle over the rice, as I found the “sweet and spicy” flavor a little lacking once everything was mixed together.</p> <p>This experience has not converted me into a Pinterest maven that plans every meal, but I am more open to doing this in the future, especially if I know I have a busy week ahead of me. Now, I am an old pro when it comes to making brownies from the boxed mix. I will even admit to pretending that I made brownies from scratch at social events when they were really from a box to make myself seem more competent than I really am. I figured it was probably about time to stop lying and actually attempt to put some effort into things, and really do it from scratch.</p> <p>Since childhood, I have a long history of attempting to bake things with my mother, where I somehow end up doing everything wrong. She would then swoop in, chuckling the whole time, and save the day. Sugar cookies? Couldn’t get them to stop sticking to the cookie cutters/cutting board/my hands. Chocolate pie? I burn the chocolate pudding every time. Bread? Came out hard as a rock. I do not have an aptitude for baking.</p> <figure id="attachment_6794" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6794" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1232-e1460160744311.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6794"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6794" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-brownies/img_1232/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1232-e1460160744311.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1460143812","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"3"}" data-image-title="IMG_1232" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>This was supposed to be the frosting.. Someone tell me where I went wrong.</figcaption></figure> <p>My only real baking success has been with pumpkin pies the past two Thanksgivings. In 2014, I was participating in the <a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/letters-from-disney-if-i-was-a-dwarf-id-be-sneezy/" target="_blank">Disney College Program</a>, so I was not with my family for Thanksgiving for the first time. I did have two Friendsgivings though, so I tried to figure out what I could contribute to the festivities. The pies turned out great, though granted my mom did send me the spices in the correct amounts so I couldn’t mess things up. I was also in charge of pies last year as my mom was out of town, and despite a slight panic moment where I called her freaking out, they also turned out fine.</p> <p>These brownies were a half success. The brownies themselves were easy enough to mix up, but apparently the pan I used was warped or my oven rack is crooked because they were tilted and did not bake evenly. I also tried to make the frosting listed in the recipe, which turned out to be more of a too-sweet dough-like creation rather than a nice smooth frosting. Who knows where I went wrong there, but I doubt I will be trying that again without some guidance from someone that actually knows what they’re doing.</p> <figure id="attachment_6795" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6795" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6795"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6795" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-brownies/img_1231/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1460142330","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"3"}" data-image-title="IMG_1231" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>I really should have seen how warped the pan was.</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6795" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-300x225.jpg" alt="I really should have seen how warped the pan was." width="300" height="225" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_1231-e1460160849976-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6795" class="wp-caption-text">I really should have seen how warped the pan was.</figcaption></figure> <p>At the end of this experience I wanted to be able to say that I would never go back to boxed brownies, but that is just not the truth. Every year for my birthday, my family goes out to a Japanese restaurant where we are delighted by a delightful hibachi grill show and delicious food. Obviously, I have neither the training nor the resources to make something that extravagant, but I thought I would give stir-fry a shot to try to at least tide me over until the next time I can go to a hibachi grill.</p> <p>From what I gather on the Internet from people that actually know things about cooking, stir-fry dishes are weeknight favorites because of their versatility and the fact that they don’t take too much effort to throw together. I was skeptical, as many of these recipes had approximately a thousand ingredients, but decided to give it a shot anyways.</p> <p>I was a little put off after my shopping trip, as it ended up being about $25 for everything I needed for this meal. I had to remind myself that I didn’t have many of the basics of this recipe already in my pantry, such as cornstarch, chicken broth, and peanut oil. Now that I have these things lying around, making this in the future will be much cheaper and easier.</p> <figure id="attachment_6692" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6692" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0402.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6692"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6692" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-stir-fry/dsc_0402/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0402.jpg" data-orig-size="6000,4000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1459534519","copyright":"","focal_length":"35","iso":"500","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0402" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Veggies all chopped! I have a knife set that I purchased from the Christmas Tree Shops discount store, so you can imagine that chopping things is a little difficult. Invest in a good knife, kids. The amount of vegetables in the recipe that I used kind of intimidated me, so I stuck to just onion and asparagus. In hindsight, I wish I would have had more veggies, but now I know better for next time.</p> <p>Cutting up uncooked chicken breast is also fairly new territory for me, as I usually opt for the pre-cooked frozen option. I probably end up wasting a fair amount of good chicken in trying to trim off the fat, but I’m doing my best.</p> <p>Basically, making this dish is just throwing things in a pan with some hot peanut oil starting with ingredients that take the longest to cook and working your way down. Start with cooking the garlic and ginger first, then add the chicken. Once the chicken is starting to brown, add the veggies. After a few minutes, add soy sauce. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch in with the chicken broth and then add the mixture to the pan. Simmer until the sauce begins to thicken, and serve with your choice of rice.</p> <figure id="attachment_6693" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6693" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6693"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6693" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-stir-fry/dsc_0406/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406.jpg" data-orig-size="6000,4000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1459536503","copyright":"","focal_length":"35","iso":"560","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0406" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Everything cooking!</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6693" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-300x200.jpg" alt="Everything cooking!" width="300" height="200" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0406-750x500.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6693" class="wp-caption-text">Everything cooking!</figcaption></figure> <p>This was so much easier than I expected it to be, and I really can’t wait to play around with ingredients in the future. I did my best to be a good little blogger/columnist/whatever I am and get an early start this week instead of waiting until the last minute as usual, but it was just not meant to be.</p> <p>A few days ago I attempted black bean burgers, which the Pioneer Woman from the Food Network assured me were simple and easy. I was skeptical but really wanted to try it, as I thought it would be nice to make a big batch and freeze them for a quick dinner through the week. I ended up buying incorrectly seasoned breadcrumbs, so the whole batch tasted super strange and not like anything you would want a burger to taste like. Also, just a pro tip, never actually attempt to grate an onion if something calls for “grated onion.” Find yourself a food processor and save yourself the trouble and tears.</p> <figure id="attachment_6450" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6450" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6450"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6450" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-guacamole/dsc_0388/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921.jpg" data-orig-size="4365,3985" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4.2","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1457113764","copyright":"","focal_length":"26","iso":"180","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0388" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>After I scooped all of the flesh into a bowl</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-300x274.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-1024x935.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6450" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-300x274.jpg" alt="After I scooped all of the flesh into a bowl" width="300" height="274" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-300x274.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-768x701.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-1024x935.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0388-e1457135574921-750x685.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6450" class="wp-caption-text">After I scooped all of the flesh into a bowl</figcaption></figure> <p>With this unfortunate failure (and a wasted two hours of my Wednesday night), I was left with a tough decision to make. Retry the burgers this week, or tackle something so easy that even I could not screw it up. Because I am weak and quite busy this week, I chose the second option, but I will definitely be attempting black bean burgers again eventually. They can’t win forever. I won’t let them.</p> <p>The easy recipe I chose was guacamole, Chipotle’s specifically. I have remained loyal to a fault to the burrito chain through their recent struggles with foodborne illness, and have never had a bad experience there. Living up here in middle-of-nowhere Western Maryland, I generally have to wait until I go home to my parents’ house in Hagerstown to experience my beloved Chipotle. I was thrilled to find out that instead of keeping it a secret, Chipotle has their guac recipe <a href="https://www.chipotle.com/guac-recipe" target="_blank">available on their website</a>.</p> <figure id="attachment_6451" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6451" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6451"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6451" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-guacamole/dsc_0389/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757.jpg" data-orig-size="4005,3805" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4.2","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1457114803","copyright":"","focal_length":"26","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0389" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Post lime juice and mashing, pre-adding the rest of the ingredients</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-300x285.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-1024x973.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6451" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-300x285.jpg" alt="Post lime juice and mashing, pre-adding the rest of the ingredients" width="300" height="285" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-300x285.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-768x730.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-1024x973.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0389-e1457135615757-750x713.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6451" class="wp-caption-text">Post lime juice and mashing, pre-adding the rest of the ingredients</figcaption></figure> <p>This was definitely the approachable, easy recipe I was looking for. All you have to do is half some avocados and scoop out their flesh, and coat them in some lime juice. Add some salt and mash it all together with a fork until it is smooth. Finely chop some red onion, cilantro, and half a jalapeno, and fold them into the mixture. Suddenly, I had a bowl of delicious guacamole in front of me, and felt better about my failure earlier in the week, and about having to wait until spring break to be able to eat at Chipotle.</p> <p>Here’s the full recipe, straight from Chipotle’s website:</p> <p>THIS IS ALL YOU’LL NEED:</p> <p>2 ripe Hass avocados (In the restaurant, we use 48 per batch, multiple times per day)</p> <p>2 tsp lime juice</p> <p>2 tbsp cilantro (chopped)</p> <p>1/4 cup red onion (finely chopped)</p> <p>1/2 jalapeño, including seeds (finely chopped)</p> <p>1/4 tsp kosher salt</p> <p>HOW TO DO IT:</p> <ol> <li>Choose the right avocado. It should feel squishy yet firm (like the palm of your hand), and be a nice dark green color on the outside.</li> <li>Cut the avocado in half and then remove the pit (carefully!)</li> <li>Scoop the avocados and place in a medium bowl.</li> <li>Toss and coat with lime juice.</li> <li>Add the salt and using a fork or potato masher, mash until a smooth consistency is achieved.</li> <li>Fold in the remaining ingredients and mix well.</li> <li>Taste the guacamole (over and over) and adjust seasoning if necessary. <figure id="attachment_6452" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6452" style="width: 1014px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6452"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6452" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-guacamole/dsc_0390/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390.jpg" data-orig-size="6000,4000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4.2","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1457115444","copyright":"","focal_length":"26","iso":"800","shutter_speed":"0.016666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0390" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The finished product!</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-large wp-image-6452" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-1024x683.jpg" alt="The finished product!" width="1024" height="683" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/DSC_0390-750x500.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6452" class="wp-caption-text">The finished product!</figcaption></figure></li> </ol> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-guacamole/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>2</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">6448</post-id> </item> <item> <title>Taylor Tries to Cook: Spaghetti Squash and Homemade Tomato Sauce</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-spaghetti-squash-and-homemade-tomato-sauce/</link> <comments>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-spaghetti-squash-and-homemade-tomato-sauce/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Taylor Whiteman]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Fri, 26 Feb 2016 20:21:49 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Food]]></category> <category><![CDATA[cooking]]></category> <category><![CDATA[food]]></category> <category><![CDATA[spaghetti]]></category> <category><![CDATA[spaghetti squash]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=6294</guid> <description><![CDATA[I’ve decided to keep the pasta train rolling this week, but with a bit of a twist. One of my favorite things to do when I want a cheap dinner and don’t actually feel like cooking is to pop a spaghetti squash in the oven, microwave some canned tomato sauce, and then bam, I have a super easy and actually not horrible for me dinner. So that’s what I’m doing this week, except this time I have decided to attempt making my own spaghetti sauce.</p> <figure id="attachment_6301" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6301" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6301"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6301" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-spaghetti-squash-and-homemade-tomato-sauce/img_1133/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1456344113","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"125","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"3"}" data-image-title="IMG_1133" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="wp-image-6301 size-medium" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-300x225.jpg" alt="IMG_1133" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1133-e1456517782127-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6301" class="wp-caption-text">Roasted spaghetti squash with the seeds removed</figcaption></figure> <p>Spaghetti squash is a great option if you are craving pasta but don’t want all of the carbs that come with indulging in it. Both begin with preheating the oven to 400 degrees. If you’re like me and don’t own a sharp enough knife to cut the squash, simply stab some slits in it and roast it for a full hour, flipping it halfway through. If you have your life together and own a quality knife, cut it in half, remove the seeds and roast it flat side down for a half hour. Once it’s done, remove the seeds if you roasted it whole, then start scraping at the flesh of the squash with a fork. It should start to come apart in little noodle-like tendrils. It honestly seems like magic the first time you do it.</p> <figure id="attachment_6303" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6303" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6303"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6303" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-spaghetti-squash-and-homemade-tomato-sauce/img_1132/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1456344110","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.066666666666667","title":"","orientation":"3"}" data-image-title="IMG_1132" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>My first attempt at homemade sauce</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6303" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-300x225.jpg" alt="My first attempt at homemade sauce" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1132-e1456517951723-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6303" class="wp-caption-text">My first attempt at homemade sauce</figcaption></figure> <p>When it comes to the sauce, canned or jarred is usually fine for me, I just wanted to challenge myself to try something new. I didn’t really follow a specific recipe I found online, but more combined a few that seemed doable with what I had available or could easily pick up on a quick midnight run to Wal-Mart. Because midnight runs to Wal-Mart are the best way to take a study break when you have an exam at 9:30 the next morning, not that I would know anything about that.</p> <p>I started by softening half of a chopped onion and a small chopped green bell pepper in oil. Once they were soft (but before they started to caramelize) I added a 28oz can of crushed tomatoes. Most of the recipes I saw called for diced tomatoes, but I like the texture of crushed more. I also added a pinch of sugar to counteract some of the acidity in the tomatoes. While letting that simmer together for about 20 minutes, I added garlic powder, oregano, and basil until it tasted like spaghetti sauce. Honestly, just keep adding a little bit at a time and taste testing it until you’re happy with the result.</p> <p>Once both are done, obviously put the sauce over your spaghetti squash “noodles” and enjoy! I added some parmesan cheese too.</p> <figure id="attachment_6299" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6299" style="width: 1014px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6299"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6299" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-spaghetti-squash-and-homemade-tomato-sauce/img_1136/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1456345333","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"125","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"3"}" data-image-title="IMG_1136" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The finished product!</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="wp-image-6299 size-large" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-1024x768.jpg" alt="The finished product!" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1136-e1456517630191-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6299" class="wp-caption-text">The finished product!</figcaption></figure> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-spaghetti-squash-and-homemade-tomato-sauce/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>1</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">6294</post-id> </item> <item> <title>Taylor Tries to Cook: One-Pot Ziti</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-one-pot-ziti/</link> <comments>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-one-pot-ziti/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Taylor Whiteman]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sat, 20 Feb 2016 00:32:25 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Food]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=6182</guid> <description><![CDATA[This week was kind of nerve-wracking. I’m home for a few days to run some errands, so I decided to use my parents as guinea pigs this week. I’ve never actually made them anything more complicated than grilled cheese, so they were a little wary that I would be able to feed them something that actually takes a little bit of effort. This week, I wanted to make one of these “one-pot” recipes that are so popular on Pinterest to see what all the fuss is about. I found a <a href="http://damndelicious.net/2014/01/20/one-pot-baked-ziti/">one-pot ziti recipe</a> that seemed pretty simple and dove in.</p> <figure id="attachment_6184" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6184" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6184"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6184" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-one-pot-ziti/img_1106/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1455901992","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.066666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="IMG_1106" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Browning the hot Italian sausage</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6184" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-300x225.jpg" alt="Browning the hot Italian sausage" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1106-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6184" class="wp-caption-text">Browning the hot Italian sausage</figcaption></figure> <p>Perks of cooking for your parents: ingredients are paid for by them, I don’t need to buy things I’ll probably only use once, and due to our “the cook doesn’t do dishes” rule, I got out of dishes. Cabernet goes great with this dish, by the way.</p> <figure id="attachment_6185" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6185" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6185"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6185" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-one-pot-ziti/img_1107/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1455902223","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.066666666666667","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="IMG_1107" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>My mom helping out a little</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-6185" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-300x225.jpg" alt="My mom helping out a little" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1107-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6185" class="wp-caption-text">My mom helping out a little</figcaption></figure> <p>I admittedly got some help from my mom this week, because who just instinctively knows the best way to remove sausage from its casing or how much pre-chopped garlic equates to four cloves? Certainly not me. Luckily my mom is wonderful and was willing to give me a little guidance here and there. I did do most of it myself, though.</p> <p>This dish is honestly as simple as it seems. First you brown the Italian sausage (the recipe doesn’t call for it specifically, but I used hot Italian sausage), seasoning as it browns. Next you add the crushed tomatoes and let it simmer for a while. Then you add the pasta and 3 cups of water, bring it to a boil, and cover the pot to let it simmer for about fifteen minutes. Mix in the heavy cream and parmesan, and sprinkle the mozzarella over the top. The recipe doesn’t call for broiling it at the end, but my mom recommended it to ensure that the mozzarella gets all melted and gooey. I put the broiler on high and just kept an eye on it and took it out when all the cheese had melted.</p> <p>My parents were actually super impressed with how delicious this dish was, and honestly so was I. My mom even asked for the recipe so she could use it later for dinner and football parties. Not being super confident in my own abilities, I was a little nervous throughout the process of making it, despite the amazing smell of the Italian sausage and tomato sauce. It was perfectly creamy, cheesy, and had a little bit of a bite. This is a great, easy dish to make if you want to trick people into thinking you have your life together and impress them.</p> <figure id="attachment_6187" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6187" style="width: 1014px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6187"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="6187" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-one-pot-ziti/img_1111/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111.jpg" data-orig-size="3264,2448" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.2","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 5s","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1455905161","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.15","iso":"320","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="IMG_1111" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The finished product!</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-300x225.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-1024x768.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="wp-image-6187 size-large" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-1024x768.jpg" alt="The finished product!" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-300x225.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-768x576.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1111-750x563.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-6187" class="wp-caption-text">The finished product!</figcaption></figure> <p>RECIPE (from <a href="http://damndelicious.net/2014/01/20/one-pot-baked-ziti/">damndelicious.net</a>):</p> <p>Ingredients:</p> <ul id="zlrecipe-ingredients-list"> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-0" class="ingredient">1 tablespoon olive oil</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-1" class="ingredient">1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-2" class="ingredient">4 cloves garlic, minced</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-3" class="ingredient">1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or more, to taste</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-4" class="ingredient">Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-5" class="ingredient">1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-6" class="ingredient">12 ounces ziti pasta</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-7" class="ingredient">3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-8" class="ingredient">1/2 cup heavy cream</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-9" class="ingredient">1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese</li> <li id="zlrecipe-ingredient-10" class="ingredient">1/4 cup basil leaves, chiffonade</li> </ul> <p>Directions:</p> <ul id="zlrecipe-instructions-list" class="instructions"> <li id="zlrecipe-instruction-0" class="instruction">Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Despite hailing from the Marvel Comics universe, it was a major departure from the likes of <em>The Avengers</em> or <em>Guardians of the Galaxy</em>. As a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but not an avid comic reader, I knew little about Deadpool’s character other than his advanced healing ability and his tendency to break the fourth wall and address the audience in the comics. Luckily, ample backstory is given.</p> <p>This movie was honestly a pleasant surprise from the opening credits. Refreshingly self-aware, introductions come as action movie stereotypes rather than actor’s names. From visceral but not gratuitous gore to intermittent fourth wall breaks, the audience is kept on their toes throughout the movie.</p> <p>Ryan Reynolds’ fast-talking portrayal of the mercenary title character, also known as Wade Wilson, was obviously a labor of love. In press tour interviews, Reynolds<a href="http://www.slashfilm.com/ryan-reynolds-talks-deadpool/" target="_blank"> reveals that he had been trying to get this movie made for years</a>, fighting for <a href="http://screenrant.com/deadpool-ryan-reynolds-interview-questions/" target="_blank">an R-rating</a> in order to stay true to the character. Incredibly, after a practically decade-long fight to get the movie made,<a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/deadpool-sequel-works-863418" target="_blank"> a <em>Deadpool</em> sequel was greenlit by FOX</a> before the movie even premiered to the public.</p> <p>Most movies fight to stay within the constraints of PG-13 in order to reach a broader audience. <em>Deadpool</em>, however, decided to completely own its R-rating. Wilson’s penchant for profanity is made clear from the very first scene, as is his penchant for violence. Deadpool prefers to kill first and ask questions while he’s doing it. Definitely go see this movie with friends, and keep younger siblings and more conservative or sensitive family members at home.</p> <p><em>Deadpool</em> also marks the first title superhero in a major motion picture to not be heterosexual. Wilson is <a href="http://www.ew.com/article/2015/11/06/deadpool-marvel-hero-pansexual" target="_blank">described as “omnisexual” in the comics</a>, but on the subject, director Tim Miller said, “Pansexual! I want that quoted. Pansexual Deadpool.”</p> <p>From action to drama, and even a touch of roommate sitcom, <em>Deadpool </em>transcends genres to include something for everyone. <em>Deadpool</em> is a story of tragedy, a story of love, a story or revenge, and a story of a twisted sense of humor that remains consistent despite tremendously difficult circumstances. No matter how beaten down he gets, the audience can count on Wade Wilson for a wise crack that will catch them off guard.</p> <p>The movie ends in a clear cliché, which at face value was not incredibly satisfying. However, taking into account the meta and self-aware nature of the movie and its title character, the ending is almost a joke in and of itself.</p> <p>At press time, <em>Deadpool</em> has earned a “Fresh” rating of 84% on <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/deadpool/" target="_blank">Rotten Tomatoes</a>’ “Tomatometer,” with an audience score of 96%. In its opening day it earned $47.5 million, and is <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-ryan-reynolds-deadpool-864451" target="_blank">projected to earn $130 million</a> over the holiday weekend.</p> <p><em>Image credit: screenrant.com</em></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://thebottomlinenews.com/6098-2/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>14</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">6098</post-id> </item> <item> <title>Taylor Tries to Cook: Hot Chocolate</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-hot-chocolate/</link> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Taylor Whiteman]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sat, 13 Feb 2016 00:59:34 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Food]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=5976</guid> <description><![CDATA[This week, I was having trouble deciding whether I wanted to do something Valentine’s Day themed or something relating to the horrendous cold weather that has been plaguing Frostburg, freezing my hair on my way to class, and deflating my tires. I feel like the Internet is oversaturated with Valentine’s-specific content at this point, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone and cover both themes. It’s hot chocolate week on Taylor Tries to Cook.</p> <figure id="attachment_5988" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-5988" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-5988"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="5988" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-hot-chocolate/dsc_0283/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283.jpg" data-orig-size="6000,4000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.6","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1455311517","copyright":"","focal_length":"52","iso":"1000","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0283" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The finished product.</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-5988" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-300x200.jpg" alt="The finished product." width="300" height="200" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0283-750x500.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-5988" class="wp-caption-text">The finished product.</figcaption></figure> <p>I tried really hard to find a recipe that could easily be made in the dorms, and I really think I succeeded. The mix only has three ingredients that you can easily throw together into a Tupperware container and keep in your dorm all winter. <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/353001/homemade-hot-chocolate">According to Queen Martha Stewart</a>, which is where I got this recipe, the container needs to be airtight. I’m assuming this is so moisture doesn’t get in and ruin the mix before you get the chance to use it, which would be a true tragedy.</p> <p>Basically, you just whisk together your sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until it is well mixed and boom, you have your hot chocolate mix. Pour a cup of milk into a microwave-safe mug and microwave it until it’s hot. For me this took about a minute and a half to two minutes, but it really depends on your microwave. Stir in two tablespoons of your mix, and viola, a delicious sugary drink that will warm your heart during this cold spring semester. Top with marshmallows, whipped cream, whatever you want (the Valentine’s theme comes in because of the pink sprinkles. Subtle but effective).</p> <figure id="attachment_5990" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-5990" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-5990"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="5990" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/taylor-tries-to-cook-hot-chocolate/dsc_0285/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285.jpg" data-orig-size="6000,4000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4.5","credit":"","camera":"NIKON D5200","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1455311551","copyright":"","focal_length":"28","iso":"2800","shutter_speed":"0.033333333333333","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="DSC_0285" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>SPRINKLES.</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-300x200.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-1024x683.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-5990" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-300x200.jpg" alt="SPRINKLES." width="300" height="200" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-360x240.jpg 360w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DSC_0285-750x500.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-5990" class="wp-caption-text">SPRINKLES.</figcaption></figure> <p>In my opinion this mix tastes way better than any store-bought hot chocolate mix, and in the long run is going to be way cheaper. This will especially be cheaper than Starbucks’ fancy new hot chocolate they’re trying to peddle. Stick it to the man; save your bonus bucks and make your own. This recipe makes SO MUCH hot chocolate mix, guys. You’re going to be set for months.</p> <p>Now you’re probably thinking, Taylor, whisking together three dry ingredients and microwaving some milk doesn’t really count as cooking. You’re probably right. But this is delicious and easy and can be made almost anywhere so I really don’t think it matters.</p> <p>Also, I’ll be live-snapping my weekly adventures making these recipes, so add <strong>bottomline</strong><strong>news</strong> on Snapchat if you would like!</p> <p> </p> <p>RECIPE (courtesy of marthastewart.com):</p> <p>Ingredients:</p> <ul> <li>3 ½ cups sugar</li> <li>2 ¼ cups cocoa</li> <li>1 tablespoon table salt</li> <li>Whole milk for serving</li> </ul> <p>Directions:</p> <ol> <li>In a large bowl, combine sugar, cocoa, and salt, and whisk to combine well. Store the mixture in an airtight container.</li> <li>For individual servings, pour 1 cup whole milk into a microwave-safe mug, and microwave on high just until hot. Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa mix, and stir to dissolve. For a larger batch of cocoa, warm the milk in a saucepan set over medium-low heat, taking care not to let the milk boil; as it warms, stir in 2 tablespoons of mix for each cup of milk.</li> </ol> ]]></content:encoded> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">5976</post-id> </item> </channel> </rss>
