On March 31<sup>st</sup>, a statement was released to <em>The Bottom Line</em> regarding a proposal submitted to administration by multiple members of the student body. The proposal, not yet approved, suggests a change of the iconic bobcat mascot to a more local, frequently seen creature- The Pigeon.</p> <p>According to the proposal, the pigeon is believed to represent FSU students because, “against common belief, pigeons are considered one of the most intelligent birds on the planet. We believe that this fact accurately represents the intelligence of the Frostburg State University population.”</p> <p>Attached to this brief yet succinct proposal were sketched ideas for a new FSU logo, multiple examples of a new Frostburg State Pigeon statue to replace the current Bobcat statue outside of Compton Science Center, and a petition sheet filled with signatures supporting this new mascot idea.</p> <p><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo.png"><img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="19213" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/fsu-student-petition-calls-for-a-new-mascot/fsu-feather-logo/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo.png" data-orig-size="1140,585" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="fsu feather logo" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-300x154.png" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-1024x525.png" tabindex="0" role="button" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-19213" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-300x154.png" alt="" width="300" height="154" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-300x154.png 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-1024x525.png 1024w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-768x394.png 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo-750x385.png 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/fsu-feather-logo.png 1140w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p> <p>Unfortunately, no further information has been released to <em>The Bottom Line</em> regarding this action, and those who submitted this proposal have not been publicly announced.</p> <p>No comments from any Administration members have been given to <em>The Bottom Line</em> as of the publishing of this article. Frostburg is said to be covered in at least 5 feet of snow over the Easter Weekend. Get some hot cocoa and bundle up in your blankets for the weekend. My tests and classwork were great, but my project idea nearly got me kicked out of my local mall- to no fault of my own!</p> <p>How did this “nearly” happen? Allow me to explain.</p> <p>For my senior year in high school, I took a college psychology class. If you have Mrs. Dunn for a psychology class, you are being taught by the admirable woman who had to witness my project and not judge me for it every day since then. Truthfully, the psychology course I took with her is by far one of my favorite classes I have ever taken.</p> <p>At the end of the semester, we were assigned a project regarding social norms. The goal: break a social norm. What is a social norm? “Social Norms” are rules that people in a given society or group are expected to follow. If it is not within that realm of ‘normalcy’, it is breaking social norms.</p> <p>Now, I certainly was not brave enough to do what some other students did in that class, like walking up to people in Walmart and taking selfies with them or sitting at a random table of strangers as they try to eat lunch. Oh <em>contraire</em>, I wanted to avoid direct confrontation as much as possible.</p> <p>So, I donned my sister’s old giraffe Halloween costume and decided to walk around the mall while my friend videotaped me. Note that it was after Thanksgiving- not Halloween- at the time of this endeavor. The only issue is that as soon as I set out on my anti-social anti-normal experience, security caught sight of me. To this day, I’m not entirely sure what was so suspicious about a 17-year-old girl wearing a juvenile giraffe costume, but I’m sure there must have been a purpose. The worst part: we didn’t even get our fast-walking, awkwardly distant chase by mall security on camera; quite honestly, I’m glad we didn’t, as I’m sure the security guard would not take kindly to being recorded.</p> <p>Eventually, when we realized this security guard was really just not giving up (kudos to him for such determination and endurance), I decided we needed something a little more reactive from the general population instead of just this one singular security guard.</p> <p>After changing out of my costume and into my much more stylish <em>sweatpants, </em>I start after my Plan B. First, I select my target who, ironically, had taken the same psychology class a year before me and, thus, was aware of the social norm project’s existence. He did not, luckily for us, know it was our goal at the time.</p> <p>The scene went something like this:</p> <p>I walked up to the cashier and ordered a single vanilla ice cream cone. After paying for my delicious treat, I stepped to the side and waited. The target, the poor sap, strode confidently over with my ice cream, beaming a proud smile over the perfectly crafted cone. He held it out towards me, and I did it; I grabbed a fist full of the ice cream, forgoing the choice of grabbing the cone as was expected. I felt somewhat guilty as he quickly tried to catch the cone, but it was too late. He stared in absolute horror as the ice cream cone was crushed in my grasp.</p> <p>I managed to thank him politely before sashaying away as gracefully as I can in my way-too-short-for-my-long-legs sweatpants and ice cream dripping down my sleeve. Before I reach the table where my friend sits recording, he calls out, “Is this for the social norms project?”</p> <p>Yes. Yes, it was.</p> <p>Now that I’ve over-explained my dramatic brush with deviating from our society’s “normalcy”, why am I discussing it <em>now</em>– over two years later?</p> <p>Well, aside from hopefully giving you a reprieve from work and/or school, I find myself noticing our new “normal” that has been brought on by the pandemic. For instance, wearing masks in grocery stores, in-person college classes, or in most other settings has become sort of a social norm. To be clear, the mask-wearing itself is technically written as a governor-mandated guideline, but people being aware of others’ health and wearing a mask with the purpose of protecting others as common courtesy is certainly a widely-accepted expectation in society nowadays and, thus, a new social norm.</p> <p>Sure, not everyone is <em>thrilled</em> about it and not everyone follows it, but as someone who works in customer service, I see a lot of customers either wearing a mask or, if they aren’t, they apologize and stand 6 feet away from me without me having to say a word.</p> <p>In summary, it’s fascinating how fast some people adjust to a newly-established ‘rule’, even if they do it begrudgingly. Additionally, if the guy I targeted for my social norms project reads this, I’m terribly sorry I ever put you through that confusion; it haunts me to this day, as you can tell from the first 619 words of this article. However, I can at least assure you that the ice cream did <strong>not</strong> go to waste afterward!</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://thebottomlinenews.com/ice-cream-social-norms/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>3</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">17648</post-id> </item> <item> <title>Why Wear a Mask?</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/why-wear-a-mask/</link> <comments>https://thebottomlinenews.com/why-wear-a-mask/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Faith Tacey]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Wed, 05 Aug 2020 23:07:30 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[College Life]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Comedy]]></category> <category><![CDATA[COVID-19]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Entertainment]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=17189</guid> <description><![CDATA[Alright let’s face it, 2020 is not our year. Between the lockdown, the handwashing, the lack of everything essential except workers- and most importantly the masks; coronavirus is just kicking our butts.</p> <p><br />As the Fall semester approaches, we are faced with more and more rules and guidelines. We might have to carry a handbook around campus to avoid breaking any. Just kidding, it’s not that hard, right? Just wash your hands, social distance, and wear a mask. Sounds simple, and to be honest, it is, yet there is so much controversy regarding the wearing of face coverings. Some believe it’s politically motivated (although I’m not sure why because if the government wanted to brainwash us they would have done it by now,) others claim they can’t breathe (even though your oxygen intake levels have been proven to not decrease), and some just simply don’t want to (even though it could help in the beauty department).</p> <p><br />Well, wherever you stand when it comes to this topic honestly doesn’t matter because masks are required in very many places including Frostburg State University, in the buildings, residence halls, and places where social distancing is not possible. So, just wear it. As a matter of fact, if you need a few reasons to wear it not related to coronavirus, here are 5.<br /><br />1. Improved dental hygiene!!!!!<br />Okay so maybe this one is a stretch but if you’re wearing a mask, chances are you are going to smell your own breath. Sitting in class for an hour or two smelling your own breath is not going to be fun if you stink. You might feel more inclined to not skip brushing in the morning even if you are late. (Do people do that? I’ve seen it in movies.) With more frequent brushing and maybe a new mouthwash, mask-wearing can be refreshing!</p> <p><br />2. Save $$$ on makeup<br />Hear me out. If you wear a mask the correct way, you will notice that your nose and the bottom half of your face is covered. So, why not skip the lipstick and foundation on the bottom half? You can focus on making your eyes pop and maybe people will notice those eyebrows you spent hours working on. Goodbye bright lips, hello bold brows!</p> <p><br />3. Attention! There is no need to fake a smile anymore!<br />Everybody fake smiles at people. Don’t try to deny it. It’s a sad truth. A kind of made up, unspoken sort of awkward social etiquette act, but hey, at least now we don’t have to, and maybe we will start being more aware of the moments when the smiles have genuine meaning.</p> <p><br />4. A new outlet of self-expression<br />There has been some talk that masks are a form of oppression and bla bla bla. I blame Facebook. In my opinion, masks are quite the opposite. Slap a powerful message on your mask and wear it proudly. It’s like a t-shirt but on your face. Put your favorite cartoon character on it, add some glitter, do whatever, go crazy, and be yourself!<br /><br />5. Avoid people WAY easier<br />We have been away from people for so long now that I’m pretty sure none of us remember how to properly socialize. The introverts in us have forced their way to dominance, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Superheroes use masks as a disguise, so we can too! Just slap it on and boom. Who even are you? Avoiding someone? The amount of time and squinting it takes for them to realize it’s you is enough time to skedaddle. No more awkward and dry conversations and no hurt feelings.</p> <p><br />As you can see, wearing a mask has many benefits besides not spreading Coronavirus. So if that wasn’t a good enough reason for you, I hope these 5 reasons have you convinced! Feel free to comment on some more reasons why mask-wearing is beneficial!</p> <p><br />Stay safe everyone!</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://thebottomlinenews.com/why-wear-a-mask/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>17</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">17189</post-id> </item> <item> <title>The Infamous CCIT Door</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/the-infamous-ccit-door/</link> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Faith Tacey]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sun, 17 Nov 2019 04:27:36 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[College Life]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Comedy]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Entertainment]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=15491</guid> <description><![CDATA[You’re on your way to class. Nothing can stop you. Not even the frigid, freezing Frostburg wind. Three minutes until class, you got this. Class is in CCIT and as you approach the door you let out a sigh of relief. You’re going to make it.</p> <p>Just kidding.</p> <p>You forgot that you have yet to encounter the biggest obstacle Frostburg State University has to offer: the CCIT door. You know the one. Sometimes you get lucky and it’s easy to open, other times you struggle. Well, don’t worry fellow students, you are not alone. Every day, you are sure to see someone struggling to open the door. Sure, there’s an automatic switch to open it, but it’s awkwardly placed on the other side, making it a whole obstacle course to use. Who knew a door could cause so much frustration? You pull hard, knowing the strength required to open the door, but no luck. Is it locked? Classes have been going for the past six hours, it should be open. You try again, no luck. Defeated, you start to walk to the other door, and just as you do, a small girl approaches the door you were just struggling with. You wonder if you should tell her to not even bother. You decide against it just as she opens it with ease. You stand there in shock. What is with this door? How can a mindless object be so infuriating?</p> <p>If you take a look at the door, you notice that it is longer than most doors, as well as kind of thin. The handle is placed awkwardly, and it’s further from the edge of the door than most handles. I’m sure no one has thought about it this hard, but come on! Who designed this door? It’s almost as if someone has a switch to unlock and lock it and hides in a bush, waiting to play tricks on random students. Or maybe, it gets stuck when you’re in a hurry? The wind certainly doesn’t help us, when trying to open that door either. Maybe the door is just a metaphor for life?</p> <p>If we really think about it, we know that life is full of opportunities. Sometimes the right ones present themselves and other times, they don’t get us very far. Without opportunities, life would be boring, and the drive to do bigger and better things would vanish. In fact, many people see opportunities as doors: they open, and they close. This can be frustrating because it becomes a continuous round of trial and error, very much like our favorite CCIT door.</p> <p>Regardless of it all, that door is really annoying and frustrating. There is no way it was designed without the thought of the ability to open with ease, and yet, here we are, struggling to get to class due to a door.</p> <p>But you know what? It won’t stop us! We will find other doors, or opportunities, however, we want to look at this. When one door closes, another one opens!</p> <p> </p> ]]></content:encoded> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">15491</post-id> </item> <item> <title>CAST’s Energetic Performance of “The Comedy of Errors”</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/casts-energetic-performance-of-the-comedy-of-errors/</link> <comments>https://thebottomlinenews.com/casts-energetic-performance-of-the-comedy-of-errors/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Faith Tacey]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sat, 21 Sep 2019 03:41:31 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Comedy]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Entertainment]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Literature]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Theatre]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=14585</guid> <description><![CDATA[“You have to go for a grade,” your professor says to the class. Photo Credit- Georgina Evans</figcaption></figure></p> <p>“You<em> have</em> to go for a grade,” your professor says to the class. There’s a slight groan from someone and you can practically feel the numerous eye rolls. The play is “The Comedy of Errors” by William Shakespeare and will be put on by students from Cambridge University. Yes, you read that right: Shakespeare. Your professor assures you it will be very funny and entertaining, but you know for a fact it will be downright boring. Not to mention the fact that the actors will also be coming into the classroom to do a workshop on how to read and understand Shakespeare. How fun.</p> <p>Turns out you were wrong. When the Cambridge University students arrived to the English classroom for the workshop, the room was buzzing with nervous excitement. There is something much different about learning Shakespeare when it comes from someone other than your professor. It seems less of a chore and more of a hobby. The students from Cambridge asked us to interpret the script from their play into our own words, and so we did. When we shared our interpretations, there was agreeable laughter. The actors had asked us to interpret the lines into something we would say in our daily lives, so it was quite entertaining to watch the nonsense of Shakespeare’s writing unfold into more modern terms to include the use of slang. Jamie Sayers, the actor who plays numerous roles in the production, said that when he first started doing the workshops, he was nervous that students would not respond with a positive, all-in attitude, but was pleasantly surprised to see that the students were engaged and really enjoying themselves.</p> <p>“The Comedy of Errors” is a play of dramatic confusion. A family consisting of a mother and father, identical twin boys, and identical twin servants are separated at sea. One of each twin boy and twin servant sails away with the father, and the other two with the mother in different directions. The father and the two boys end up in Syracuse, while the mother and the two other boys end up in Ephesus. The son in Syracuse decides to venture off to find his long-lost twin brother, and with him, he brings the servant. Around the same time, the father also decides to seek his wife and lost sons. They all arrive in Ephesus only to find that there are a fee and punishment for those who come from Syracuse. The two boys, Antipholus and Dromio, get off easy, but the father must find the money for the fee or face death. Almost immediately, Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse are mistaken for Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus and they must figure out why and where all the confusion is coming from.</p> <p>The actors from Cambridge University did a wonderful job portraying this comedic confusion in a high-energy, over-exaggerated performance, filled with silly costumes and dancing. Basically, they showed us the last thing we would expect from a performance of a Shakespeare play. They took what Shakespeare had written and made it their own without taking away the elements of the original script. They made it very entertaining and easy to follow regardless of the endless confusion. You could tell they wanted to be here, and they made you feel the same. They engaged the audience with their captivating, silly performance, but also with their body language, frequently turning to address the audience with questions and statements. The audience was in constant laughter, and at one point, there was even a performance of Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy.”</p> <p>So, at the end of the day, I guess we should thank our professors for telling us to go. To highlight a few, there was, “Detroit 67”, “Five by Ives”, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane”, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, and “Fat Pig”. All of these productions left the audience with messages of determination, strength, practice, equality, and love. But, what did “Fat Pig” leave us with? Don’t date the fat girl? </span></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The capstone of the 2018-2019 Theatre and Dance season, “Fat Pig”, from my point of view, was a disappointment. Now, that is not a reflection on actors, tech crew, or scenery. Everyone involved in this production performed their roles perfectly: the sexy secretary, the rude playboy, the meek boyfriend, and the unnervingly confident plus-sized woman, all portrayed, so the audience would hate most of the cast in the end, which is a part well played. However, with a title such as, “Fat Pig”, I knew the show wouldn’t exactly be politically correct, but I truly didn’t expect what seemed like 2 hours of pure fat shaming. The story was about a thin man, meeting and dating a plus-sized woman, his friends make fun of him for dating “someone like her” and ultimately he breaks up with her in the middle of a work party, claiming he can no longer handle being constantly embarrassed by being with her in public. Now, I’m not sure if it’s the feminist part of me that would like to see this script burned or just the human part of me, but I know that I laughed less than 5 times throughout this “humorous” production. As of right now, the toxic, fat-shaming legacy of, “Fat Pig”, is what is to be broken in the new season for Theatre and Dance. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I only hope that the new season leaves the audience with feelings of empowerment, humor, hope, or joy, and not a curiosity as to how this production was ever approved as I felt with, “Fat Pig”. </span></p> ]]></content:encoded> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">14503</post-id> </item> <item> <title>CES Presents: Johnny Peers & The Muttville Comix</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/ces-presents-johnny-peers-the-muttville-comix/</link> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Cameron Knight]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sun, 15 Sep 2019 13:45:12 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[College Life]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Comedy]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Entertainment]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=14489</guid> <description><![CDATA[On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Cultural Events Series presented Johnny Peers & the Muttville Comix in the Performing Arts Center with performances at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Johnny Peers leads a cast of rescue dogs through challenging and funny tricks as he plays the ringleader of the pack. Peers is a Ringling Brothers Clown College graduate and has been working with dogs since he got his first puppy, a beagle mix named Freckles from the Humane Society. Most of the dogs have been rescued from shelters and pounds.</p> <p>Johnny Peers & The Muttville Comix have appeared on numerous shows such as Late Night with David Letterman and Primetime Live. He has also performed at Disneyland, the Big Apple Circus and the White House. Johnny Peers’ performance in PAC was his first in Frostburg and was charitable in nature with a dollar of each ticket going to Allegany County Animal Shelter.</p> <p>The show is family-friendly and had a lot of jaw-dropping moments. Peers has two dogs named Murphy and Willy whose talent of ladder-climbing amazed the audience. The dogs are highly trained and can do backflips, slide down a slide, jump rope, and more. The kids loved seeing the pups perform and laughed while having lots of fun.</p> <p>The audience was also involved in the show. Peers told the audience to say “stop” and “clap” for the dogs. He also had five people, mostly kids, come onto the stage and help the dogs do some tricks.</p> <p>At the end of the show, Peers had one of the dogs use a wishing well to put up a sign “The End” and the audience cheered and clapped for them. Kids had the opportunity to come on stage to take pictures with Peers and the dogs for free and could also hug and pet them.</p> <p>Jonny Peers & The Muttville Comix is great for family-fun!</p> ]]></content:encoded> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">14489</post-id> </item> <item> <title>Six Dudes and Their Mouths</title> <link>https://thebottomlinenews.com/six-dudes-and-their-mouths/</link> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Gwendolin Schemm]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sun, 21 Apr 2019 16:02:28 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Campus News]]></category> <category><![CDATA[College Life]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Comedy]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Entertainment]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Music]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://thebottomlinenews.com/?p=13959</guid> <description><![CDATA[FROSTBURG, MD – The award-winning a cappella group of Six Appeal paired a “playful, harmonious, cheeky, care-free sound” with comedy in their performance at Frostburg State University (FSU) on April 18 in the Alice R. The group performs about 150 shows per year. The ensemble has performed at college campuses, state fairs, festivals, and at the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl. Beginning as a hobby in 2006 at Concordia College in Minnesota, the group became a professional ensemble in 2010 as they transformed their sound and introduced new members.</p> <p>The members of Six Appeal are Andrew Berkowitz, Michael Brookens, Reuben Hushagen, Evan Taylor Jones, Trenard Jones, and Jordan Roll.</p> <p>The group kicked off the evening with their rendition of ‘Some Kind of Wonderful.’ Before performing the next song, Brookens commented, “man, the student body looks a lot different than I expected,” drawing laughter from an audience compromised of FSU students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the Frostburg community. He followed up asking if anyone had been to an a cappella performance before, and after a few raised their hands, noted, “oh, you knew what you were coming to see, and you came anyway?”</p> <p>Before continuing their performance, Brookens explained a cappella to the audience, describing it as a vocal performance without a musical instrument accompaniment. The next song had members of the group making trumpet and horn noises with their mouths.</p> <p><figure id="attachment_13963" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-13963" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-13963"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="13963" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/six-dudes-and-their-mouths/sixappeal1/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1.jpg" data-orig-size="794,794" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="SixAppeal1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Six Appeal offers an Educational Experience to teach students about the history of a capella and it’s path through music history // TBL Gwen Schemm</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-300x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-13963" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-300x300.jpg" alt="Six Appeal offers an Educational Experience to teach students about the history of a capella and it's path through music history // TBL Gwen Schemm" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-750x750.jpg 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1-85x85.jpg 85w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/SixAppeal1.jpg 794w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-13963" class="wp-caption-text">Six Appeal offers an Educational Experience to teach students about the history of a capella and it’s path through music history // TBL Gwen Schemm</figcaption></figure></p> <p>After their third song, Brookens introduced the members of Six Appeal, giving those in the audience a bit of each member’s background. Roll, a high tenor, is one of the two members from Bismarck, N.D. Also hailing from Bismarck, Hashagen is the group’s bass and “Viking.” Berkowitz, ‘Berko,’ comes to the group from Bloomington, Minn. and is the percussionist of the group. Evan and Trenard Jones are from Orlando, Fla. <a href="https://evantaylorjones.com/">E. Jones</a>, the younger of the two, performed as a soloist appearing on season 10 of <em>The Voice</em> before joining Six Appeal as a low tenor. T. Jones performs as a baritone. While introducing the Jones, Brookens added, “they are brothers and siblings too,” drawing laughter from the audience. He then included that the Frostburg audience laughed, while they did not in Montana. Brookens himself hails from Marion, Kan. and is a mid-tenor.</p> <p>Six Appeal then sang a mash-up of ‘Moondance’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’ incorporating some comedic choreography.</p> <p>Brookens and Berkowitz then took the stage as Brookens acknowledged Berkowitz as a “walking and talking drumset” that was “cheaper than the real thing.” The rest of Six Appeal took a break as Brookens had Berkowitz demonstrate his ability to make sounds of a bass drum, snare drum, symbols, and toms through his mouth, followed by a Berko drum roll. Berkowitz also showcased his abilities as a beatboxer. Brookens asked the audience how a human being (Berkowitz) can make the noise and then answered his question by saying, “it’s actually quite simple…We have no idea.” During their time on stage, Brookens told the audience to clap along if they were having a good time, a bad time, or even when they were confused.</p> <p><figure id="attachment_13966" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-13966" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-13966"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="13966" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/six-dudes-and-their-mouths/sixappeal3/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3.jpg" data-orig-size="794,794" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="sixappeal3" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Six Appeals covers the oldies, chart-toppers, and original tunes // TBL Gwen Schemm </p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-300x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-13966" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-300x300.jpg" alt="Six Appeals covers the oldies, chart-toppers, and original tunes // TBL Gwen Schemm " width="300" height="300" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-300x300.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-768x768.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-750x750.jpg 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3-85x85.jpg 85w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal3.jpg 794w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-13966" class="wp-caption-text">Six Appeals covers the oldies, chart-toppers, and original tunes // TBL Gwen Schemm</figcaption></figure></p> <p>The audience then participated in a “speed test” as they clapped as fast as they could while Berkowitz kept pace by beatboxing, and the rest of the members joined them back on stage. In the midst of the test, Berkowitz paused and thanked the audience for their “nice round of applause” and reassured them that he “made his mother crazy.”</p> <p>Six Appeal performed ‘I Wan’na Be Like You’ from <em>The</em> <em>Jungle Book </em>before asking the audience if they had experienced love. Brookens commented that only seven hands went up, and Frostburg was for the lonely hearts. Berkowtiz called out a couple that was “cuddled up and neither raised their hands.”</p> <p>The group sang James Taylor’s ‘Your Smiling Face’ followed by a Doobie Brothers hit that was for “all seven of the ones who raised their hands.”</p> <p>Six Appeal then shared their experience performing at the Vanity Fair party for the second year, with Roll chiming in that “Lady Gaga was close enough for us to smell her.” They then performed their version of Beyonce’s ‘Drunk in Love.’</p> <p>Brookens introduced the next song, explaining that six is more than five, and only five have sung lead thus far. Berkowitz then sang an original entitled ‘On Your Love’ about “what musicians never write about… relationships,” drawing laughter from the audience. He told the audience to “sing along if you know the words” followed by a drum set clashing made by his own mouth. Six Appeal then sang Prince’s ‘Kiss.’</p> <p><figure id="attachment_13968" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-13968" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-13968"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="13968" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/six-dudes-and-their-mouths/sixappeal2/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2.jpg" data-orig-size="794,794" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="sixappeal2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Trenard Jones joined Six Appeal after seeing an Ad on Craigslist // TBL Gwen Schemm</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-300x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-13968" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-300x300.jpg" alt="Trenard Jones joined Six Appeal after seeing an Ad on Craigslist // TBL Gwen Schemm" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-300x300.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-768x768.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-750x750.jpg 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2-85x85.jpg 85w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sixappeal2.jpg 794w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-13968" class="wp-caption-text">Trenard Jones joined Six Appeal after seeing an Ad on Craigslist // TBL Gwen Schemm</figcaption></figure></p> <p>The next song performed was a song the group had put together themselves as the “world could use a lot more love,” with Brookens mentioning that it is a “crazy time to be alive.” Six Appeal then performed a mash-up of John Mayer’s ‘Waiting on the World to Change’ and Macklemore’s ‘Good Ole Days’ and ‘Same Love.’</p> <p>Before performing their final song, Six Appeal offered their thanks for their tech crew, Frostburg, Joel, Reggie, and the bartenders who “made the show bearable.” They finished by thanking the audience, noting that if they weren’t in attendance, “it would have been an awkward rehearsal.” They also told the audience that they were selling merchandise in the back, saying they take cash, check, and cards. T. Jones chimed in assuring the audience that they even gave the cards back.</p> <p>Six Appeal took a moment to reflect on their successful 2018, as they performed as the Vanity Fair party and beat out 184 other a cappella groups from 16 countries to be crowned international champions at an a cappella festival in Moscow, Russia. The group will travel back to Russia in the upcoming two weeks to compete again and defend their title. They asked for the audience’s help in the voting with Roll adding, “you can influence your very own Russian election” as the audience erupted in laughter. Six Appeal then followed up, commenting that whatever the state is, red or blue, the audience always laughs.</p> <p>Six Appeal concluded their performance with Funk’s ‘Tell Me Something Good’ and received a standing ovation for their efforts.</p> <p>The evening finished with a Q&A session with the group. Audiences members asked a range of questions, from who makes the arrangements and advice to up and coming a cappella groups. Roll, Berkowitz, and Brookens make the arrangements before incorporating the other members to ensure it has “Six Appeal sound.” The group began in 2006 at Concordia College as a hobby before all members “quit their jobs in 2011.” One audience member asked each member’s favorite a cappella group with the general consensus being they listen to a bit of everything. Prior to each show, the group arrives at the venue about three hours before start time. They carry their own sound equipment and go through an extensive warm-up and sound check before “eating and sitting around.”</p> <p>The Jones brothers moved from Florida to Minnesota for the group, mentioning the ‘realness’ of people in Florida and the passive-aggressive people of Minnesota. We embody everything good about human nature and acceptance. Recently, I have been getting more and more into self-empowerment and the empowerment of others. We are strong people. It is harder than ever before to balance the stresses of school, work, friends, and other responsibilities. According to Active Minds, a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the conversation surrounding mental health, adults aged 18-24 are the least likely group of people to seek help for a mental illness. This age group, our age group, is struggling. Now, more than ever, self-love, self-empowerment, and building each other up are so important. To focus in on this empowerment, I decided to give a new podcast a try. Let me say right now how happy I am that I decided to do this.</span></p> <p><figure id="attachment_11362" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11362" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-11362"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11362" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/strong-woman-thats-so-retrograde/simbari/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari.jpg" data-orig-size="559,504" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Simbari" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Stephanie Simbari, co-host of That’s So Retrograde</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari-300x270.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-11362" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari-300x270.jpg" alt="Stephanie Simbari, co-host of That's So Retrograde" width="300" height="270" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari-300x270.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Simbari.jpg 559w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11362" class="wp-caption-text">Stephanie Simbari, co-host of “That’s So Retrograde.”</figcaption></figure></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The podcast that I decided on is “</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">That’s So Retrograde” </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">hosted by Elizabeth Kott and Stephanie Simbari. The podcast is focused on the hosts realizing and becoming who they are truly meant to be. They are real, and they are not afraid to be themselves. They recognize their mistakes, and they learn from them. The podcast is meant to empower themselves and their listeners. They want their listeners to find who they are supposed to be, as well, and be able to live their best lives. The podcast is under the category of Health, although they are so much more than that. They bring in and interview “gurus” of different life paths. They want opinions on everything under the sun and they want to share the wealth with their listeners. The podcast is not only dedicated to being the most healthy version of yourself physically, but also mentally and spiritually. In addition to being empowering, they are also hilarious.</span></p> <p><figure id="attachment_11363" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11363" style="width: 290px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-11363"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11363" data-permalink="https://thebottomlinenews.com/strong-woman-thats-so-retrograde/logo-3/" data-orig-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1.jpg" data-orig-size="1000,1000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Logo" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>That’s So Retrograde podcast logo.</p> " data-medium-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-300x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1.jpg" tabindex="0" role="button" class="size-medium wp-image-11363" src="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-300x300.jpg" alt="That's So Retrograde podcast logo." width="300" height="300" srcset="https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-750x750.jpg 750w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1-85x85.jpg 85w, https://thebottomlinenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Logo-1.jpg 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11363" class="wp-caption-text">“That’s So Retrograde” podcast logo.</figcaption></figure></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The episode that I listened to was the most recent episode from March 7. The episode is called “To the Right, To the Right (guest: Stephanie Staidle).” The guest for this episode, Stephanie Staidle, is a business coach that is focused on utilizing the strengths of the right brain when creating or achieving your dream career. She has many insightful tips and ideas surrounding this topic. We are powerful people and we are able to do anything we want to do. The world is ours to take. There are so many more cliches that I could throw out, and they would all be true. There is no reason to let people tear us down or for us to tear ourselves down. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The podcast is available on iTunes in the podcast section, on Soundcloud, or on their <a href="http://www.thatssoretrograde.com/blog//to-the-right-to-the-right" target="_blank">website</a>. Please give these ladies a listen. Empowerment of the human race is something that we should be doing every day. We are strong; we need to believe that.</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them.
