When you seek energy, comfort, familiarity, something sweet, something bitter, something hot, or even cold, coffee has you covered. It’s always there for you. During those dreaded 8 AM classes and those long all-nighters, we can confidently reach for a nice cup of joe or several. So why not take today to celebrate its versatile and pleasant existence?
Coffee, like most discoveries, was accidental, although I am starting to believe all the best things are. It was discovered by an Ethiopian shepherd named Kaldi in 750/800 AD, who is sort of a historical mystery. Legend tells that he was herding his goats when all of a sudden he looked up and couldn’t believe his eyes as his goats were dancing! He investigated the cause and found a magical energetic berry that prevented his goats from sleeping at all. He reported this finding to his local monastery where a beverage was made from these berries and boom- coffee!
So today, celebrate being a coffee fiend, drink as many cups as you want (within reason)! Hit up Mountain City Coffeehouse and Creamery, or Clatter Cafe, right here in Frostburg! Today, be a dancing goat!

With students moving back to campus just a couple of weeks ago, the local Frostburg community, while cautious, is excited to have us Bobcats back. Downtown Frostburg offers a variety of activities, shops, and restaurants, despite COVID-19 limitations, to participate in and support. Here you’ll find the top places to visit and support within a walking distance of campus.

Clatter

If you haven’t visited Clatter, have you lived? Clatters authentic coffee house vibes, friendly staff, and superb coffee make Clatter one of the best study + coffee spots. Due to COVID-19, their dining room is not open, but you can still choose to support this small business by ordering online and picking up, or through their Mechanic Street walk-up window!

Allegany Bike Trail

For those of us who like the outdoors, the Allegany Bike Trail is the perfect place close in proximity to campus for a hike or run of your preferred distance. Stretching from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD, it is popular among bikers, runners, and walkers alike. The trail is lined with trees which makes it perfect for shade cover during the hot summer months, and even better during the beautiful mountain falls.

Princess Restaurant

The Princess Restaurant, which opened up in 1939, serves the perfect hometown feel. With friendly staff and cheap prices, it’s the perfect place to go with friends for a trip away from campus. You’ll immediately feel the “downtown vibes” as soon as you walk into this restaurant.

Mountain City Coffeehouse and Creamery

While their hours can sometimes be difficult to align with your schedule, Mountain City offers a large coffee, ice cream, and food item menu. With lots of indoor and outdoor seating, this is another perfect place to go and do homework at. Again, you can’t beat anywhere in Frostburg with the amount of friendliness that you feel when walking through any downtown Frostburg store (I think Mountain City’s Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte is something you must try).

Main Street Books

If you’re a bookworm like me, a filled to the brim bookstore is your dream (and maybe also a very dangerous place to walk into). The owners are very knowledgeable in all things books and can answer all of your questions. They are also extremely friendly and very fun people to talk to. They have their shop set up in a way that is inviting to all ages and all different kinds of readers. From poetry to “how to cook only using garden vegetables,” it seems as if Main Street Books has it all.

Frostburg Farmers Market

If you enjoy local, fresh produce, this farmers market is close in proximity to Clatter and Lorenzo’s (sounds like an amazing Friday morning to me). Running on Friday mornings from 9:30 am-1:00 pm from May to October, you can grab some fresh fruit to help you stay focused for the week, or even some fresh flowers for your dorm.

Lorenzo’s

Lorenzo’s is your classic bakery. With a variety of options, you can never go wrong here as everything is always so good. Their prices are low and you can grab a warm donut to brighten your morning for under a dollar. Right across the street from Clatter, you can’t miss it. This place also has amazing and friendly staff.

As you can see, Frostburg has a little of everything, always accompanied by a fun and friendly staff! That’s the thing about downtown Frostburg; the stores are locally owned and operated, and you can tell that everyone has a love for their town. With all of these places offering business still during COVID, take a break from classes and schoolwork and walk up to downtown Frostburg to visit these amazing businesses.
