Antarctic Ice Melting After Record Temps
On Feb. 6, Antarctica recorded its warmest temperature ever, at about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This may be old news, but more than two weeks later, NASA released photos showing the ice melting at an alarming rate.
These aerial images show Eagle Island on the northern tip of the Antarctic peninsula. The images are side by side and were taken only nine days apart.
According to NASA, the melting that took place over this one stretch is not unusual. With warmer temperatures come melting ice and record-setting high temperatures don’t help. This event of drastic melting that came with the record temperature is the third major Antarctic melting event in the last few months, with more predicted to come in warmer weather.
