Incoming SGA President Discusses Plans for Remainder of Spring Semester

Frostburg’s State University Student Government Association (SGA) has plans to bring their name back to the forefront in hopes of making students more aware of local and campus issues and the impact SGA can have when students reach out to them.

SGA is popularly known for sponsoring FSU’s annual pep rally and homecoming dance; however, SGA is also instrumental in addressing the concerns and issues of students, reviewing and approving budgets, and also ensuring that students maintain a strong voice of educational wants and needs.  SGA representatives consist of twenty-five undergraduate students that are voted in each year.

“In the past, I don’t think we reached out to the campus as much as we should, but we’ve accomplished our goal now. SGA’s seen a huge increase in the number of voters this year than before,” said Katelyn Currier, vice president of the Student Government Association.

Currier, an Exercise and Sports Science major, has been a member of SGA since 2013, with her position ranging from senator, vice president, to president. Current  SGA President Katie Morgan is graduating this May, and Currier will succeed her incoming president for the remainder of this semester and the upcoming school year.

Organizations that want funds must sit before SGA’s board to be considered.  SGA decides whether the organization will be approved or rejected to receive those funds. SGA and Black Student Alliance (BSA) have a budget that must be decided upon.

“One thing that SGA does is fund money for different programs and events, but we do other things too. We help students vocalize their issues. The room and board has increased because of a WIFI program, along with a budget decrease this year. Many students are not aware of this and we need them to be.  ”

“Katie and I have worked on  getting our name back out there for the past year. Some students don’t even know where our office is located. I want the students to be aware of everything that’s going on, and to vocalize any issues that they have. SGA will always be here to help. “

“This semester we will be having Town Hall meetings, discussing local issues. This is the first time FSU has ever done this and it’s been very successful ” Currier stated.

SGA‘s two upcoming Town Hall meetings will discuss campus, local, and state issues. City commissioners will be present to answer any questions students or professors may have.

“SGA has been working really hard and it feels good to have things going in the right direction.  Students often complain a lot, so we want them to know that SGA is here to help them. We want students to have the best four years that they can possibly have at FSU,” said Currier.

On Tuesday, April 7, SGA will be hosting their second Town Hall meeting in the Lane University Center at 6 pm.  All students are encouraged to join this forum, voicing any changes they would like to be made  at FSU or in the community.
