Redefining Community: FSU’s Hoover Aiding in Time of Pandemic
If the community doesn’t step up to help one another in a time of need, then who will?
Joel Hoover, Productions Services Coordinator for Frostburg State University’s Cultural Events Series, knew he couldn’t sit around and do nothing as the novel COVID-19 wreaked havoc around the globe. He decided it would be him to offer his support in this time of need.
Hoover, along with Rommel Gonzaga, CEO of Gonzaga Health in LaVale, and Jose Luggi, the compliance Officer at Gonzaga Health, began making masks for the community.
The trio started making masks about 3 weeks ago, as the virus began to spread more. Allegany County’s first confirmed cases of COVID-19 came on April 1st as announced by the Allegany County Health Department. As of April 10th, the county has 10 confirmed cases.
Through research, Gonzaga found how to make homemade masks using cotton with flannel lining on the CDC website. Hoover says it was Gonzaga’s idea to also make face shields. That’s where Luigi came in.
“We maintained social distancing throughout,” Hoover noted.
So far, the trio has made about 4 dozen shields and 5 dozen of the N95 masks. Hoover designed the “N95 masks based on the specs from the CDC.” They plan to continue to make the masks as long as they are in demand.
If anyone in the community has actual medical supplies such as masks, shields or gowns, Hoover urges them to donate the supplies.
“Right now, our focus is for medical professionals and those with medical conditions in need of masks,” Hoover said. “All of our masks are donations.”
