Regents Cup Stays On The Mountain

The Bobcats caped off another thriller against the Salisbury Sea Gulls in the 20th annual Regents Cup meeting to ensure that the trophy never leaves Frostburg. This win is the third-straight against the Sea Gulls for the Bobcats.

As expected, the match up between the Bobcats and the Sea Gulls came down to the final minutes, but it was Bobcats’ kicker Jeremy Harrison with a 37-yard field goal in overtime followed by a strip fumble by junior Paul Kumpar recovered by on the ensuing drive that brought home the Bobcats 14th straight regular season win. Frostburg finishes the regular season 9-0, marking first time in program history that the Bobcats have finished the regular season with a undefeated record.

The Bobcats were able to clench the NJAC Title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs behind Connor Cox’s four touchdown performance.

Cox got things started early when he found his go to target Malik Morris for a 68 yards touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Lead by tailback Kadarrius Campbell, the Sea Gulls respond on the following drive, highlighted by a 55 yarder and then 6 yard run by Campbell.

After defense stands from Salisbury and then Frostburg, the Bobcats took a 14-7 lead on a 48 yard 3rd & 5 pass from Cox to Morris. The wideout second receiving touchdown of the afternoon. Morris fined the afternoon with 5 catches for 132 yard to go along with his two scores.

Sea Gulls answered the Bobcats score on a 8 yard touchdown run from Raekwon Mccarter. A drive highlighted by another long carry from Kadarrius Campbell, this time a 40 yard run to add on the Salisbury’s 341 yards ground attach.

The Sea Gulls’ next score came in the second quarter on a 8 yard pass from Frank Pipich, who was making his first start. Pipich finished the afternoon with 189 yard on the ground.

Frostburg State defense were able to hold the Sea Gulls offense scoreless on the next few drives, allowing the Bobcats to take a 21-20 lead going into the half after a 22 yard touchdown pass from Cox with 58 seconds left in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Salisbury took a 28-21 lead to start the fourth. The Bobcats responded after the Sea Gulls fumbled on a punt that was supposed to give them a chance to put the game away.

Bobcats tailback Jamaal Morant tied things up 28-28 on a 7 yard run. Morant finished the afternoon with 121 yards on the ground.

Tied 28-28 with 7:00 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, Frank Pipich took a 80 yard carry to the house on the Sea Gulls first play on the drive.

Despite a defensive stop from the Sea Gulls, the Bobcats capitalized on yet another miscue after a high snap on a Salisbury punt that give the Bobcats the ball at Salisbury 25 yard mark.

Cox roll out on 4th & goal to find Lincoln Ikwubuo for his 4th touchdown pass. Evening the score 35-35 with a 1:37 to play.

Both teams failed at an opportunity to end the game in regulation before heading into overtime.

Cox was named MVP of the game.

Frostburg will now wait to find out their seeding for the NCAA selection show Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
