UPC’s Springfest Brings Fun for Students
Every spring semester the University Programming Council puts on an event for the town of Frostburg, called Springfest.
University Programming Council is an organization of students who come together to create events and activities for students. These events include things such as movie nights, where UPC picks a popular movie and shows it in one of the big classroom areas for many students of Frostburg to come watch for free. They do live entertainment, such as open mic nights and other events where they bring animals for students to see. UPC also hosts lectures, tournaments, and off-campus trips, live performances, and game shows.
The council is broken up into 3 divisions apart from the presidency. There is a VP of Marketing, Sam Louissant, a VP of Operations, Gabby Cousino, and a VP of Programming, Guy Jones.
VP of Marketing, Sam Louissant, was in charge of Springfests’ theme this year. The theme was survivor, which you could quickly see with all of the staff at the event walking around wearing survivor shirts. This theme derives from the show “Survivor” with the question being, who has enough endurance to survive this years Springfest. Louissant’s job as VP of marketing acquires him to get a team and market for any and every event that UPC has. Within his marketing team he is responsible for making videos, posters, having sidewalk talk, etc. He includes that his job is done with a political marketing style.
Springfest is an event Louissant believes to have been put on every spring semester for the past 5 years. At this event, the staff’s goal is to provide a field day for students and to get other kids here to have some fun before the week of Frostburg’s finals. They also have food, and prizes; Louissant describes and compares Springfest to a “huge carnival.” The prizes that people can win were iPad’s, beats headphones, and other electronic things that the students of Frostburg would like.
The Springfest event consisted of many inflatable games such as global rampage and other fun games that require endurance. It also featured a zipline, live entertainment, a dance scene from Frostburg’s dance team, Epitome, a relay race, and other small games and performances. Staff Kevin Keh, was the host for the day, responsible for getting the crowd hype and introducing the live entertainment.
Many people other than the 21 of the UPC staff volunteered and helped out with the success of the event. Food was served although some people did complain about the Italian sausage and chicken being gone too quick.
Louissant had a goal of two thousand people attending the event but believes his goal was highly succeeded believing it to have been about 2,500 people in attendance.
“Our goal everyday is to make the campus a better place and we feel that we succeeded” that says Louissant. Many people at the event said that they were having a good time and it was proven with the smiles on everyone’s faces. Thanks again UPC, good job.
