A Preview Into Vampyr
Vampyr is an upcoming action-RPG game currently being developed by Dontnod Entertainment, a relatively new video game developer best known for their critically acclaimed 2015 title, Life Is Strange. Vampyr is a game that takes place in 1918 London, the time of the Spanish Flu epidemic. Players will assume the role of Jonathan Reid, a doctor who has recently been turned into a vampire. Reid will struggle to find his new place in the world as he is forced to choose between upholding the Hippocratic Oath or sating his newfound vampiric hunger.
There will be two major ways to play the game. One is to sate Reid’s hunger, which will allow him to level up and learn powerful abilities that he can use to take on tougher opponents in combat. He could use these powers to potentially save the city from other supernatural creatures, as the game will have werewolves and other vampires.
However, this will come at the cost of the lives of other characters. The developers claim that Vampyr will have no nameless, faceless citizens; every character in the game will have a personality and a role to fill, so each one killed will have consequences. For instance, killing characters will certainly attract the attention of the Guard of Priwen, an order of vampire hunters.
The other way is to abstain from vampirism and focus on treating patients. This will help Reid hide his condition, but will also lock him out of leveling up almost entirely. Additionally, there is no guarantee that Reid will avoid being attacked even if he avoids killing, so playing this way could be challenging as players try to escape combat and survive without killing anyone. Depending on the player’s choices, the game will have four different possible endings.
Vampyr is set to release on June 5, 2018 for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows for $59.99.
