A Season of Change

The Frostburg State University (FSU) women’s lacrosse team is having a disappointing season so far. So far, the team has only one win this season and it did not come until the team’s eighth game of the year. The disappointing start to the season is a bit of a surprise since both the coaching staff and players anticipated on having a better season than they did last year.

Earlier this season, Head Coach Megan Foy stated that the team’s goal was to get to .500 this season. With the way their record is now, the team would have to win all of their games for the rest of the season to break even. Suffice to say that is a tough challenge, due to how competitive the CAC is.

This season was a bit of a turnaround for the team. Foy talked about bringing a new style of lacrosse to the game. This season the team is using a new offensive and defensive strategy. With changing the offensive and defensive strategies, new ideals have also been adopted. Their midfield strategies have been altered to reflect the new ideals and style that the team is using this season. Along with the changes to the offensive and defensive schemes, the team also brought in eight new players.

Rebooting a team’s style and strategy is not an easy thing to do. Both the team and coaching staff need a lot of time to adapt and get used to the changes that are being implemented. It’s not something that can happen overnight. Unfortunately the team didn’t get a lot of practice time with the changes. The amount of snow that the area got earlier this semester kept the team locked up inside and off of the practice field.

The team was scheduled to participate in scrimmage that would have allowed them to iron out the wrinkles in their scheme, but it was canceled due to snow. The eight new players that joined the team this year would need more time than the others to not only adapt to the new schemes but to also get used to their new teammates and competition.  Part of the team’s struggles this season can be attributed to the amount of changes that have taken place this off-season.

There are two points of concern for the team however.  The first point of concern for the team is the amount of points opposing teams have scored on them this season. Besides the game against New England College, a game that the team had won, the opposing teams have all scored more than ten points. Defense has to be a point of emphasis for the rest of the season. Also, the team isn’t generating enough points. The team has only scored more than ten points four times this season.  A player has to step up and score for the team.

Look for the team to be more balanced as the season goes on. Before the game against Mary Washington, the scores for the games have been getting closer. This improvement is a positive sign for things to come for not only the rest of the season, but for future years.

This season for the lady Bobcats has been one of change. While the team has been disappointing so far this season, expect the  team to be more competitive once they get acclimated to the scheme changes and gain chemistry with each other.
