Alexander’s heroics lead Bobcats to wins over Glenville State and Urbana (Ohio)

On Feb. 6, the Frostburg men’s basketball team opened the newly renovated gym in style with a game-winning three-pointer over Concord.

In the 10 days since, the Bobcats have enjoyed a considerable amount of success, winning two of their next three games. The Bobcats have won three of four overall with the most recent two wins coming against Glenville State and Urbana (Ohio). The Bobcats had lost six of seven before this recent run.

The recent trend is a good sign for FSU, but it’s even more impressive when you consider how the Bobcats were able to win these games. After Terry Kenner’s corner three sealed the win over Concord, the Bobcats won their next two games against Glenville State and Urbana (Ohio) similarly; winning each contest on a game-winning shot by senior guard Daniel Alexander. In Frostburg’s three wins, Alexander averaged 24 points and 9 rebounds, good enough to lead the Bobcats in both categories.

Against Glenville State, the Bobcats won 74-72. The Pioneers, who entered the game with a 13-9 record went back and forth with the Bobcats all night. The wildly entertaining game was capped off with Alexander hitting a tough lay-up with two seconds to play, giving FSU a 73-72 lead. Alexander put the nail in the coffin with a subsequent free throw to give FSU a two-point victory.

The game against Urbana (Ohio) looked to be in good hands with the Bobcats leading 61-55 with 1:29 remaining, but the Blue Knights came clawing back and got a 62-61 lead with a jumper by Shaun Monroe with 8 seconds remaining. Alexander hit a jumper of his own just seconds later to give the Bobcats a 63-62 victory.

Alexander, who was recognized for his stellar play with MEC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 10th, spoke to how the team has been adjusting to the high level of play in Division II. He said, “this division is a high level for basketball and I love how this level of competition brings the best out of us. At times, it is a struggle but there’s always beauty in the struggle and I feel like our team knows what we have to do to get to where we want to be.”

With only four games left before the conference playoff begin, the Bobcats will look to continue their winning ways to build momentum. They will have a home-court advantage on their side to end the season with their next three games being in Bobcat Arena. The first of which will be against West Liberty on February 19th with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
