Asylum themed Late at Lane Brings Huge Turn Out

Halloween came to Frostburg early this year. “Lane Asylum” was the theme of October’s Late at Lane that caused a little bit of controversy when it was announced. Some thought it was insensitive to the mentally ill. Many others did not read that far into the name, just into the thoughts of haunted houses and the possibility of zombies roaming around.

If anyone was to arrive around midnight they were welcomed by a line coming out of the door. Once inside, students would have to make their way through Lane with their eyes peeled for the sinister individuals mixed in the crowd.

This month, Late at Lane stayed true to its name by hosting a Haunted House, tarot card readings, wax hands and henna tattoos. Students could enjoy a cold Bloody Mary and loads of candy as they waited in line for each activity.

Even something as simple as a photo booth gave students chills as they were greeted by a creepy figure inside the booth. Meek screams and laughter filled the air. Though there was no dance, there was a skate party being hosted in the Alice R. Manicur Assembly hall. The DJ played everything from 90’s hits to today’s R&B and Hip hop.

I haven’t been on skates in years. I thought I was gong to fall every moment but it was so much fun said Yarne White as she came off the floor.

Joel Meyers, an illusionist, occupied the loft stage giving a show like no other. Crowd participation was needed for the card tricks and slight of hand tricks. He also played up the rumors of Frostburg having ghosts with a skit involving a ghost night table that the audience seemed to like as they clapped in awe.

The tarot card reader put a bit of fear in the mind of a young Ronje James after her cards revealed a lot about her emotions in the future. Those that did not find joy in being scared half to death could spend their time with the caricaturist getting a cartoon drawing of themselves.

UPC staff member Jasmine Branch says it took them almost 10 hours to fully decorate the entire lane center for this event. It is safe to say UPC’s hard work to create the Halloween theme was a success.

Some Late at Lane goers decided to dress up to go with the theme.

The next Late at Lane will be a “Midnight in Paris” theme.
