Black Numbness and Fatigue by the Black Student Alliance
The Black Student Alliance, an organization on Frostburg’s campus that seeks to promote and extend the cultural identity of Black Americans, hosted an event last week about Black fatigue and awareness that sought to not only explain and support their community but offer a safe space for communication as well. The event began with an opened dialogue, those who attended were hesitant at first but as the event progressed, the livelier and intimate the discussion became. Among the various answers that were discussed in the opening when asked “how are you feeling?” there was confusion, exhaustion, and some hints of anger. The confusion arose from the juxtaposition of what this country and the world globally preaches that it stands for, versus the inaction that we see on a daily basis. There is emphasis on equality of all kinds, but with the lack of actual reform, all these campaigns and proposed safe spaces are proving to be more performative than anything else. To close this segment of the presentation, one of our hosts, Savannah D. Kent, elaborated on her exhaustion, explaining that it stems from a constant surplus of what can only be described as “disappointed but not surprised” that erupts with the continued coverage in the media of politicians and activists who claim to be doing the best they can but are only making excuses for how Black people are getting slaughtered in the streets every day. In her explanation, she details that it can be tiring to hear it consistently reported but little ever done about it, especially when one recognizes the full magnitude of cases that are being kept quiet. The current Derek Chauvin trial was one of her prime examples, stating that the trial was going on for too long when the entire world witnessed the injustices committed against George Floyd. This, she explains, is why she felt the need for this open discussion, she feels she cannot be the only one who deserves to talk without being invalidated or shut down at every turn.
Following this were remarks from the Black Student Alliance (BSA) President, Robert F. Smallwood, who stated that Black people are being treated as second class citizens when they make up a decent amount of the population. He added onto Ms. Kent’s remarks with the word “frustrated”, detailing that the stealing of Black culture but damning of the people that created it and taking credit from them is one of the most infuriating aspects of being degraded. In his words, “It’s frustrating, it gets to me every now and again but then the true feeling I have is that we know who we are, we appreciate who we are, and we know good and well we aren’t what people make of us or say of us.”
The Guest-Speaker and Co-Host Tawona Pearson, from the on-campus counseling service (CAPS), added that these feelings can also be attributed to a feeling of wanting to be whole. With this, the presentation moved forward into defining fatigue and numbness in a broad scope but also in the lens of Black Americans, which was “experiencing tiredness from mental or physical exertion of illness after being directly or indirectly overwhelmed by racialized violence” and numbness in this lens was also defined as “[when] the body is emotionally shut down after being overly exposed (directly or indirectly) to racialized violence or repeated dismissal of racialized violence.”
Subsequent to this was a segment led by Mrs. Pearson that explained what vicarious trauma is and how it effects individuals and the collective. Defined in layman’s terms, vicarious trauma is trauma felt by experiencing violence directly or indirectly, that is to say that if you observe enough, you can be traumatized by the media that you take in especially when that media reflects your condition. Vicarious trauma can be experienced by anyone who has encountered racial bias or discrimination and it’s effects are very real. Pearson stated:
“[vicarious trauma is] something beyond the fatigue and numbness. There are those who are experiencing vicarious trauma or other forms of trauma because of experiencing some kind of racism. So, first let me just say that when we are experiencing vicarious trauma, the watered down version of that is that we are experiencing something that somebody else is actually experiencing because we are in contact with that person. Just watching everything going on in the media and how we can have these reactions, it was akin to PTSD. This was important to add just in case someone was saying to themselves that they may have fatigue and numbness but it feels like more. We wanted you to know there is something called racial vicarious trauma…”
With vicarious trauma comes an almost out of body sensation when presented with traumatizing material, the dangerous effects of this being damaging to the individual’s mind but also the equality movement has a whole which can be disadvantaged when members start ignoring and missing important pieces of information. With that being said, it is also dangerous when affected members are too worn down by personal or media consumption that they feel too helpless or too broken. As described by the presentation, there is a balance than can be reached, where you feel and sit with the hurt and use it to propel you forward.
At the end of the presentation, leaders explained that the greatest thing you can do in this moment is look after yourself. The plight is not easy and the invalidation can make it almost impossible but it is a building block of success to look inwards and ask yourself what you need.
