Bobcat Men’s Soccer Rallies Past CNU

On Saturday, Oct. 6, FSU’s men’s soccer took a 1-0 win over Christopher Newport University (CNU) at the Bobcat Stadium. Frostburg junior Blake Geatz, a defender, scored the only goal of the night with an assist from senior Willie Jefferson.

Sophomore Randy Putnam took FSU’s corner kick, leading to Jefferson’s beautiful high cross to Geatz. Aligned perfectly with CNU’s goal, Geatz headed the ball straight past the goalie into the lower left side of the net. Geatz scored the final and only goal of the game with less than two minutes left (88:45).

Joel Assal, FSU’ first-year goalkeeper, managed five saves during this game, preventing CNU from scoring. Out of the five, Assal had one save in the first half, and four in the second half, as CNU nearly shot back-to-back. Assal saved a shot on goal from CNU’s Stephen Durbin with about four minutes left in the second half. Geatz scored for FSU only two minutes following this save.

The Bobcats are now 4-7-1, and prepare to take on Mary Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. in Frostburg.

Commenting on the outcome of the game, sophomore Will Macomber said, “it was nice to get the full week to train, and the formation change has really helped our offense. We’ve been in every game this year and we just haven’t been able to close out games, so it was nice to get this.”
