Bobcat the ‘Burg

Mascot statues on college campuses promote a culture of inclusion and belonging. The statues become a token of luck and a representation of school pride and accomplishments. The Frostburg State University campus currently lacks this emblem. Members of the Student Government Association (SGA) have begun a campaign to bring a bobcat statue to Frostburg State University’s campus. Jenna Puffinburger, the SGA Vice-President, is spearheading this crowdfunding initiative. A bobcat statue will improve the school spirit, foster traditions, and unify the campus community of Frostburg State University.

The statue itself is 6,900 dollars and an additional 3,000 dollars for the cement platform. The FSU Office of Alumni Relations raised the 3,000 dollars solely through generous alumni donations. The crowdfunding campaign must raise 7,000 dollars and will end on December 31st, 2018. The bobcat statue will be built in front of the Compton Science Center, overlooking the steps and clock tower. It will be made completely of bronze, weighing 300 pounds and standing 53 inches tall. All Classics Ltd, located in Newark, Delaware, will construct the statue. Currently, there is no definitive date set for construction. Ideally, it will be completed in time for a dedication during Homecoming 2019.

The bobcat statue has come to fruition through student-led initiatives. It is completely funded through the generosity and support of donations. Links to the crowdfunding page can be located on the FSU Foundation’s page.
