Bobcats Drop Games Against Randolph-Macon and Salisbury

The Bobcats are fighting through what has proved to be a difficult stretch of men’s lacrosse. Frostburg State University (FSU) had two games this week, both unfortunately ending in tough losses to Randolph-Macon College (RMC) and in-state rival Salisbury University. The Bobcats are now 7-4 on the season.

In Tuesday’s game against Randolph-Macon, the Bobcats came out on the wrong end of an instant classic. The game ended in heartbreaking fashion as junior attack Colin DiSesa scored his first goal as time expired, propelling the Yellow Jackets over the Bobcats in an 8-7 overtime thriller. Randolph-Macon came into the game hot, boasting a four-game winning streak and an 8-2 record.

The Bobcats and the Yellow Jackets went back and forth in a game that had six ties and five lead changes. RMC was led in scoring by Brandon Smith and Brendan Markovic with two goals each. The last of Markovic’s goals tied the game at 7-7 with 6:48 remaining in regulation. The Bobcats were lead in scoring by junior attack Michael Sipes, who scored three goals. First-year midfielder Matthew Ward was also impressive, notching three assists on the afternoon.

The second game of the week pitted the Bobcats against their bitter rival Salisbury, who came into Saturday’s game undefeated and the top ranked Division III team in the nation. The Bobcats kept the score close for a while, down 3-2 with just under 9 minutes to play in the first quarter, but Salisbury went on a 10-2 scoring run to finish out the half. The deficit would prove to be too much for the Bobcats, and the game ended with a final score of 21-6.

Salisbury had five players score at least three goals. Corey Gwin was the standout for the Seagulls, with four goals to go along with four assists. Paul Ruppert and Jason Clinton each scored two goals for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats are in a bit of a slump, dropping the last three games. It will be important for the team not to dwell on the recent string of losses, as a few conference heavyweights await them. The Bobcats face a pair of ranked opponents next week in #5 York and #18 Christopher Newport on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. Wednesday’s game will be on the road with a 7 p.m. opening face-off, and Saturday’s game has a 1 p.m. opening face-off at Bobcat Stadium.
