Bobcats Look to Make A Run As The End of The NCAA D3 Regular Season Approaches

Frostburg State University’s men’s basketball team is looking to seize a spot in the CAC tournament with four games to go in the regular season. The Bobcats are having an impressive season rebounding from last year’s 3-22 record. The Bobcats are looking to make a return to the CAC Tournament.

The Bobcats are currently holding the 6th spot in the Capital Athletic Conference. In order to secure a spot in the six team CAC Tournament, the Bobcats will have to hold off the Mary Washington Eagles who currently hold the 7th spot in the conference. Frostburg State is (10 – 11) with a (6 – 8) record in conference play while Mary Washington is (5-16) but are holding their own in the conference at (5-9) with two wins behind the Bobcats. Both teams have split the season series but Frostburg will get the nod into the tournament at the end of the season if both teams share the same conference record. Frostburg State would win the tiebreaker because of a better overall record.

Although Frostburg has had their ups and downs this season there is a lot to be optimistic about at FSU. Frostburg fans are very confident about the Bobcats finishing the 2014-2015 seasons on a high note. The future of Frostburg basketball looks to be very promising. Some of the positives to take away from this season have to be the effort and heart that the Bobcats have been playing with all year long.

All that effort on the court has made Frostburg the home to some of the CAC top performers. Junior Nick Smoot’s nice stroke for behind the arc has him leading the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game. Smoot is also number two in the conference in 3 points field goal made at 50. Junior Jerel Carter, the second leading scorer on the Bobcats 10.9 (ppg.), is tops in the CAC with 4.0 assist per game. Senior Jabari Kamau, team third leading scorer at almost 10 points a game is top 5 in the conference in rebounds per game at 7.2. The Bobcats also have a freshman in Zach Coalman who has been a huge difference maker on the floor blocking shots back and forth. Coalman has 29 blocks on the season.

Now for the Bobcats as a team, they tend to spread the ball around a lot while doing the little things to come away with victories. The Bobcats are tops in rebounding and are also extremely active in getting steals and rejecting shots on the defensive end. Another positive in the Bobcats play this season are the hustle plays. Coach Hatch’s Bobcats have also struggled in a few areas this season. The Bobcats find it hard to convert from the free throw line. The team also gives up too much on the defensive side of things and they frequently turn the ball over.

The Bobcats will look to put everything together in the next two weeks in their quest to make the CAC tournament and make a run at the CAC tournament championship.

Next game for Frostburg State is at home on Feb. 11 against Southern Virginia.
