Bobcats Soccer Teams Close Out Regular Season

Frostburg State men’s soccer team picked up their eighth win of the season on Thursday, Oct. 26, with a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia. The Bobcats struck almost right away in the game, with a goal by junior Rodrigo Valenzuela. Just seven minutes into the game, Valenzuela was able to get the ball in the back of the net, giving the Bobcats an early 1-0 advantage. It was not long until Southern Virginia tied things up, with a goal by Tyler Mcelwee, knotting things at 1-1. The match was still all tied up going into halftime. Finally, in the 71st minute, Bobcat senior Hendrik De Wit knocked home what would end up being the game winning goal, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 victory. This was De Wit’s first goal of the season. The Bobcats end their regular season 8-9-1. They take on Penn State Harrisburg Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m., in the first round of CAC playoff action.

The Frostburg State women’s soccer team was also able to gain a victory last Wednesday night against Southern Virginia. Southern Virginia struck first and early, when in the 19th minute of the match, Maia McArthur was able to put in a goal, giving SV a 1-0 lead. The Knights controlled most of the first half, but the Bobcats defense was too strong. The Knights went into the half with a 1-0 lead. Quickly into the second half, the Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick, just two minutes into the half. Freshman Brooke Shehade capitalized on the opportunity, tying things 1-1. Just three minutes later, Kourtney McClain was able to strike again for the Bobcats, in what would end up being the game winning goal. The Bobcats would get the 2-1 victory, giving them a 10-8 final season record. The Bobcats end their season on a five game winning streak, where they outscored their opponents 11-1 in those five games.
