Bobcats Softball Split Two Games in CAC Tournament
The Frostburg State softball team went into the CAC tournament taking on Christopher Newport and Salisbury on Saturday, April 27. Frostburg lost the first game 8-2, but won the second game 10-9.
In the first game, Frostburg scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. First-year Amber Keene brought junior Claire Hanlon home on a double, and in the top of the second, Hanlon hit a single to bring home senior Olivia Ford and put the Bobcats up 2-0.
The Bobcats held the Captains scoreless in the first two innings, but in the next five, Frostburg did not score. The Captains went on to score eight runs and take the win against the Bobcats. Keene had two hits and one RBI, sophomore Sam Carver had two hits and one run, and Hanlon had one hit, one run, and one RBI. Sophomore Taylor McCarty took the loss, and her record now stands at five wins and seven losses.
In the second game of the tournament, Salisbury tallied the first run of the game in the top of the first. In the bottom of the second, the Bobcats jumped out to a 2-1 lead.
First-year Erica Payne singled to the right side to send her teammate in to tie the score. Then, after a Salisbury error, Ford put the Bobcats up by one. Salisbury came back to tie the game at two a piece in the top of the third and held Frostburg scoreless in that inning.
In the top of the fourth, Salisbury put up six runs to jump out to a six point lead. The Bobcats tried to spark a comeback by scoring four runs in the inning. With a couple of hits strung together, sophomore Kat Treff stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and cleaned them by hitting a triple, making the score 8-5. Treff later scored on a ground out by her teammate to make it 8-6.
For the next two innings, Frostburg held the Seagulls scoreless. In the bottom of the fifth, there were a pair of walks to start off the inning. McCarty singled home one of her teammates, and junior Katelyn Mehrling scored on a fielder’s choice, evening the score to eight a piece. McCarty scored to put the Bobcats up by one on a wild pitch by the Seagulls. In the final inning, Salisbury tied the score up at nine a piece.
Treff came to the plate with a runner on third and second, only needing a hit to win the game for her team. She drove a single down the third base line to win the Bobcats the game and to extend their season.
McCarty had three hits, two runs, and one RBI, Treff had two hits, one run, and four RBI’s, and Ford had one hit and two RBI’s. Sophomore Ally Wieman took the victory, and her record now stands at one win and one loss.
