Bobcats Softball Splits Double Header Against York
On Friday, April 19 the Frostburg State softball team took on York College at Spartans Stadium in a double header.
The Bobcats came into this game with four wins and five losses in the CAC conference. York came in with seven wins and four losses in the conference.
York drew first blood scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Both teams were evenly matched. Even though Frostburg matched York with their total amount of hits, they just could not seem to rally enough together to score until the seventh inning. After the first four innings, York jumped off to a commanding lead of 5-0.
York College’s defense did a good job of holding the Bobcats scoreless until the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, Gabby Sandy worked a walk and advanced to second after Claire Hanlon grounded out. She later scored off of a Spartan error. Amber Keene helped put another run on the board by doubling, which sent her teammate Aliyah Ramey in to score the Bobcat’s second run.
The Bobcats comeback fell short when Katelyn Mehrling grounded out to the pitcher. The Bobcats lost the first game 5-2. Olivia Ford finished with two hits, Katelyn Mehrling had two hits, and Claire Hanlon finished with a hit. Taylor McCarty took the loss putting her record to five wins and four losses.
In the second game of the double header, it was a tight game throughout and was sent in to extra innings.
The Bobcats were the first on the board in the top of the second. McCarty smacked a home run to center field to make the score 1-0.
York came back to even up the score with a two out RBI single.
Both teams struggled to score after the fourth inning and only mustered two hits total before going into overtime.
Ramey singled up the middle for the Bobcats, which started a spark for the rest of the team. Ramey advanced after a bad thrown ball that was hit by her teammate Keene. Erica Payne worked a walk, and McCarty came to bat with the bases loaded.
McCarty doubled to right center field and drove in three runs, putting the bobcats up 4-1.
With great pitching by Emily Moll, she retired all three Spartan batters to earn the win. Hanlon had two hits and McCarty had two hits, four RBI, and one run scored.
With this win, the Bobcats win total went up to 16.
