Bobcats Storm to 7-0

On Saturday March 2, the Frostburg State University (FSU) baseball team earned two wins in a double header against RIT Tigers and their seventh straight win to push their record to 7-0.

The Bobcats’ first game in the double header was a low scoring contest resulting in a score of 3-2 in eight innings. There was a show of great pitching by sophomore Colby Lee in six innings and junior Franco Velasquez in two innings that consisted of thirteen strikeouts by the Bobcats. The RIT Tigers took a two point lead in the fourth inning. At the bottom of fifth inning, senior Jason Paredes was able to score FSU’s first point. An inning later, junior Ryan Roell hit a solo home run to tie the game. It would be Roell that ended up scoring again on the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

In pitching, Lee had eleven strikeouts with an earned run average of two, and Franco Velasquez had two strikeouts with an earned run average of zero. Hitting, Roell had two hits, two runs, and one run batted in, junior Jessie Hodge had one hit, Paredes had one hit and one run, and senior Nick Fuhrmann had one hit with one run batted in. Fielding, junior Quinn Ambeault had nine putouts with four assists, Roell had seven putouts, Hodge had one putout with two assists, and Fuhrmann had two putouts with one assist.

In the second game, FSU showed a lot of offense to make the game 10-2 in the third inning. RIT tried to make a comeback attempt, scoring twice in the fourth and sixth inning, and once in the seventh inning, but the Bobcats insurmountable lead proved to be to much for the Tigers to overcome. The final score was 10-7.

Pitching in the second game, junior Mike Livingston had five strikeouts pitching four innings, senior Dan Ryczek had one strikeout pitching 1.2 innings, and junior Chris Roosevelt had three strikeouts pitching 1.1 innings. Hitting, sophomore Bret Fogle had two hits with four runs batted in, Paredes had two hits with one run and two runs batted in, and junior Mitch Fyffe had one hit with one run batted in. Fielding, Paredes had seven putouts and one assist, Fyffe had four putouts, junior Devin Griffith had three putouts, and Hodge had two assists.

The Bobcats’ next game is on Saturday March 9, at 12 p.m.
