Bobcats Win in Walk-Off Fashion
In a game that was postponed a day because of weather concerns, the Frostburg State University baseball team earned their first win of the season and the first win under new head coach Anthony Williams. The Bobcats played split in a doubleheader against the Clarion Golden Eagles and the Tiffin (Ohio) Dragons.
Game One
The Bobcats and Golden Eagles played to a nine-inning stalemate that displayed great defense by both teams, fielding, and pitching. There was a total of sixty-five putouts on the day by both teams. Clarion scored at the top of the first inning by an error. Frostburg took no time to answer. Senior Ryan Roell hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Bret Fogle was able to run home to tie the game. After this was a stretch of outs and field flipping from offense to defense with great performances of fielding by both teams. There were rare errors, if any, that were made by the fielders of the game. The game was sent to a tenth and eleventh inning. The Bobcats’ last points mirrored their first, only with two different people involved. AJ Campbell hit a fly out to center field allowing Nick Benitez to run home for their first win. The final was 2-1 Bobcats.
Game Two
Tiffin challenged the Bobcats more defensively. The first inning came and went without any team putting points on the board. However, in the second inning, the Dragons scored six points all earned. The Bobcats limited Tiffin until the bottom of the fourth inning, where two more runs were earned. FSU, making an attempt at a comeback, scored Tre D’Amico off a Roell single and Nick Benitez off a DJ Coleman at-bat. Tiffin had two more runs at the bottom of the seventh, and Frostburg had one more at the top of the eighth. From there on the score stayed 10-3 Tiffin.
Frostburg’s next game will be on Sunday, Feb. 23 against Goldey-Beacom.
