Bridgerton v. Downton Abbey
Over the winter break, a new period show came out, Bridgerton. Everyone was obsessed and loved the plot, the main characters, and their love story. Having watched this show, I can say that it is absolutely amazing, and if you enjoy a good romance period piece, this would be a good show to watch. Something that I had thought about though, after finishing the show, is that this show took off a lot better than the show Downton Abbey, another period show that began in 2010. Now, I want to state that the reasons given in this article are my speculations and not fact.
The first big thing is that Bridgerton was on Netflix, something almost anyone has. It popped up and had a high click rate because it is on a popular platform. Downton Abbey was on PBS and the seasons were on Amazon Prime. This may have been part of the reason Bridgerton took off so well, the accessibility of it was just better than Downton Abbey. The other part of this is Bridgerton’s season one was all on Netflix at that very moment, there was no waiting. And, as a part of this newer generation, we hate waiting for new episodes. It’s not a thing we are used to.
The second thing I noticed is the storyline of Bridgerton took off very quickly compared to Downton Abbey. While Downton Abbey was still developing characters and establishing problems until half-way through season one, Bridgerton presented its main plotline and characters within the first episode. I think, especially with younger generations, this takes off so well because there is no wait time to see what you’re in for, it’s right there for you to see and determine if it is the right show for you.
The third and final difference I noticed was that there was mystery with Lady Whistledown. This is not something you get in Downton Abbey, there is very little mystery and suspense. With Bridgerton, Eloise’s curiosity and need to determine who Lady Whistledown leaves a sort of whimsy about the show. A subtle sub-plot to Daphne’s main plot of finding a husband and the story that follows that journey. I think the mystery of Lady Whistledown combined with the love story between Simon and Daphne just leaves the viewers wanting to come back. Or, rather, hit play next and see where the show will take them.
Now, this article is not to say one is better than the other. I love them both equally and think both are amazing and recommendable shows. This is just speculation about why Bridgerton took off a lot faster, especially among younger viewers than Downton Abbey. The way our younger generations are, we don’t really like to wait for shows, they’re usually already and on Netflix or Hulu. Also, we were between 7 and 11 when the first season of Downton Abbey came out, which is not exactly the age when you start watching period type shows. I do encourage anyone to watch either of these shows or both of them. They are amazing and worth the watch. Downton Abbey has finished out their seasons with six of them all on Amazon Prime, and Bridgerton has one season on Netflix with a highly anticipated second season in the making.
