CES1

(Derek Brown and FSU’s Jazz Ensemble)

On Thursday, Oct. 24th, the Cultural Event Series at Frostburg featured beat-boxing saxophonist Derek Brown, as part of their 2019 On the Edge series. The event was held in the Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall (ARMAH) in the Lane University Center at 7:30 p.m. Brown was joined by the talented FSU Jazz Orchestra and faculty from Frostburg’s Department of Music.

Brown also hosted a music workshop in the Pealer Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). The workshop began at 2 p.m. This event was a master class open to music students as well as the Frostburg community.

Brown had a lot to offer with world premieres, solos, duets and collaborations with the Jazz Orchestra. Many of the songs he included were “A Simple Gesture”, “Empathique” and “Hoping for the Best”.

(Brown Performing “Punker Hill” with Brent Weber)

Brown has a special duet with fellow Jazz Orchestra member Brent Weber called “Punker Hill”, which is inspired by punk rock music with a mix of jazz. Another cross-genre song was the world premiere of “Again”, which is inspired by arena rock. Brown’s third world premiere is called “All Figured Out”.

Derek Brown quickly engaged the crowd with his personality, making jokes and having the crowd participate in a song as well called “Chameleon”. It was an immersive experience and very unique for those who haven’t had a chance to experience Jazz music live. It gives you a new appreciation for it. For those who are familiar with this type of music will grow a deeper love for Jazz with the performances Brown and FSU’s Jazz Orchestra gives.

The Jazz Orchestra performed a couple of songs that will be featured in their upcoming concert at WVU on Nov. 14th.
