College Football Playoff Controversy

This past weekend the College Football Playoff Committee came together and ranked the top six teams. Many college football fans were surprised because, for the first time in college playoff history, an undefeated Power 5 team didn’t make the playoffs. The rankings were Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama. Florida State came in at five followed by Georgia at six. There were many questions as to why Florida St didn’t make the playoffs despite doing everything they needed to do. The answer came down to them not having a starting quarterback and possibly missing the backup QB. At first, I thought it was unfair to the rest of the Florida State team who worked so hard all year to get to this point. Then I watched their 3rd string QB throw for 55 yards and only score 16 points while Washington scored 34 points, Texas scored 49 and Alabama scored 27 points on the number one team in the nation and handed Georgia its first loss since Dec 4, 2021. 

I don’t think Florida State got robbed but I do think the committee got it wrong. First, let’s talk about Georgia, one loss drops them from 1st to 6th. A loss to Alabama who is now in the playoffs. So Georgia loses to Bama, Bama loses to Texas and Texas loses to Oklahoma and somehow Texas makes it in? The last time Georgia lost it was in the SEC championship where they were the number 1 seed and lost 41-24 to Alabama and still made the playoffs. Then won its first National Championship before going on to make it two in a row. A Team that just lost its first game since 2021 by three points should not drop five rankings and should not be pushed out of the playoffs. 

Now let’s get to the number one seed. Washinton should be the one seed. Heisman Trophy candidate Micheal Penix Jr., one of the best offenses in the nation, just beat Oregon AGAIN. The Pac-12 has been one of the best conferences this year and the Big 10 has not been. Michigan scored fewer points than Washington in their conference championship game against a team who were dealing with injuries on offense. I believe the rankings should be the following-

1 Washington

2 Michigan

3 Alabama

4 Georgia

5 Florida State

6 Texas

Some people might have a problem with me putting Alabama in over Texas and let me say this, Texas beat an Alabama team early on in the season when Bama was dealing with quarterback issues. Alabama just beat the #1 team in the nation, beat the back-to-back national champions, and just beat a team that hasn’t lost since Dec 4, 2021.
