Communications Students Organize First Annual Frosty Awards

On May 2, 2015, the Mass Communications/Communication Studies department will host the First Annual Frosty Awards. Frostburg State University has not seen anything like the Frostys before.

The Frostys is an award show hosted by the students, for the students. This show is a platform, a chance to showcase the raw talent and skill of FSU’s student body. The show wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t Annie Danzi, an assistant professor in the Mass Comm department who serves as the award show’s executive producer.

Since her arrival at FSU last semester, she has definitely made a good impression on her students. “I wish she was here our freshman year. I sure would have enjoyed class a lot more,” said senior Franchesca Garland.

During the fall semester, interest meetings were held in order to assemble the perfect production team. When the team arrived back to school in late January, the team began meeting and preparing for the show. The decision was made to have the show in the Center for Communications and Information Technology building (CCIT) on May 2.

Ly’ Anh McCoy and I stood as the Event Chairwomen and assembled a planning committee to decide on promotional materials, decorations, awards categories, funding and a rehearsal schedule.

Categories for student submissions included Best Mini-Documentary, Best Promotional Video, and an award for Original Music, to name a few. The most anticipated award of the night will probably be the award for Best Music Video, which had the most submissions.

Students did not turn in their submissions quickly. Though flyers for submissions began flooding the campus and social media in March, the April 1 deadline crept up with little submissions. In typical, college student fashion, submissions came pouring in on the last few days.

Submissions will be judged by professionals in the Mass Comm field. A programming specialist, Meaghan Rosso, and the head editor at Discovery channel, David Malouin, are just two of the seven judges.

It may not be the Grammys, but the show will include red carpet commentary by Quinton Brown and Dominique Elias. A surprise skit by the host, Nate Hutchings, and a few special performances are also in store for the much-anticipated night.  Teaser: two of the performers performed at this year’s Frostburg’s Got talent.

On this past Thursday, April 9, the first technical rehearsal was held in the TV-3 studio. All the auditions, meetings and rehearsals will pay off once May 2 arrives.

“I missed the deadline, but I so hope there is another show so I can submit something next year” said Charlayna Brady, a member of SGA. This may be the first, but hopefully it will not be the last Frosty Awards.
