CW’s Nancy Drew, Batwoman, and the Return of Riverdale

As the weather gets colder, we become more inclined to reach for our cozy blankets and TV remotes. So, we sit and browse through millions of TV shows and movies, but what do we want to watch? Many streaming services know that fall and winter are the times viewers increase, so they capitalize on the opportunity. This month, we see the release of two new CW shows, as well as the return of Riverdale. But are they any good? Let’s start with ‘Nancy Drew’.

Nancy Drew, as you may know, is a young, female detective who uses her brains to solve mysteries. She is a character in a very popular book series, now turned TV show. In the show, Nancy Drew is still coping with the death of her mother, and she swears off of solving mysteries. Of course, this doesn’t last very long, otherwise we wouldn’t have a show. The small town she lives in witnesses a tragedy, and Drew is once again sucked into the compelling world of unmasking murderers. Unfortunately, everything feels rushed, and the acting feels very forced. The characters are very stereotypical, and there seems to be little depth. The show seems to follow the plot of ‘Riverdale’, season 2, copycat style. Hopefully, as the plot thickens, and the show continues on, this will change, but we can only hope.

Next, we have the highly anticipated ‘Batwoman’, which received better reviews than ‘Nancy Drew’. Many critics were nervous that this show would just be another by-the-book, DC series. Luckily, this one seems different, which is promising. The show differs from the rest by offering us more information than the other, very secretive DC superhero shows. In ‘Batwoman’ we don’t have to sit in annoying suspense to find out secrets that prove to be of little importance; the show is very straight forward. It also seems to be a little less “soapy” than the other superhero shows. I mean, sure, ‘Batwoman’ is still following the same superhero drama cutout as the other shows, but in a way that provides us with exciting, new content, that isn’t straying too far from the others.

Lastly, we have the return of ‘Riverdale’ with season 4. Be warned, this season is a heavy one. As you may know, towards the end of season 3, we lost Luke Perry, the beloved actor who played Archie’s dad. This tragic event took a toll on all the actors and those who knew him best, and unfortunately, as with most movies and TV shows, the team had to decide how to write him out of the show. After watching the heartbreak unravel on screen, the season picks up with exciting new changes. This season almost makes it feel like a completely new show, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, but so far it seems promising.
