Dynamic Earth
Two showings of the short film Dynamic Earth were shown on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Planetarium in the Gira Center (CCIT). The showings, one at 11 a.m. and one at 4 p.m., were open to the public. The event was hosted by Micah Goskie and Kendyl Walten, current students on campus.
Dynamic Earth, released in 2012 and narrated by Liam Neeson, is an immersive short film that focuses on Earth’s climate system. Documenting the carbon cycle that allows life on Earth, the film depicts how our planet would behave if the carbon cycle, and ultimately, life, were to cease in existence. Earth’s sister planet, Venus, was the example given for what our planet would become. Viewers followed a path of energy circling around the Sun, through major weather events, past whales and sharks in the ocean, and even near an exploding volcano. Through intricate and colorful graphics, Dynamic Earth was an artistic and informative plea for people to be more cognizant of the effect our actions have on our environment in the short term and in the long run.
The Planetarium is located on the first floor of CCIT, and shows different short films every 2nd and 4th Wednesday and every 3rd Saturday of each month. Dynamic Earth will be shown again on Nov. 14 and 28 at 6 and 7 p.m. Seeing! – A Photon’s Journey Across Space, Time, and Mind will be shown at 5 p.m. on Nov. 17.
