Early Voting in Allegany County Attracts Frostburg Students
Early voting began in Maryland yesterday, with a record-breaking 181,000 votes cast across the state. In Allegany County, the only early voting polling place is located in Cumberland, approximately 10 miles from Frostburg’s campus. Despite the drive, a number of students traveled down the mountain to cast their ballots in the Presidential Election.
“I know there is mail-in voting, but I’m old school,” said Douglas Flores, a Junior from Silver Spring who attends FSU. “I just prefer paper and this feels simpler to me. With the mail, I feel like anything can happen.”
Flores traveled to Cumberland with BJ Harris, a Business Administration student from Waldorf. “I thought I would tag along and take advantage of the opportunity to get my vote in,” said Harris.
Both students were casting their first ever vote for President. “I know who I’m voting for,” said Flores, “but it’s not perfect. I looked at both candidates and their weaknesses, and there are always weaknesses, but in our current situation, it’s the lesser of two evils.” Among the issues top of mind for Flores and Harris is racial inequality. “Yes, racial issues impact me, my life, and those I care about,” said Flores.
Dakota Whitacre, a Senior in the Geography Department, is local to Allegany County but didn’t mind waiting in line for an hour to cast his ballot. “This is an important election and one that I am very eager to speak my mind in,” he said.
Whitacre says his number one issue is healthcare and the disparity between Republican candidate Donald Trump’s and Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s plans made the decision about who to vote for easy. “I’ve never been more decided in my life,” said Whitacre who has voted in every state, local, and federal election
since 2014.
As for when we might know the outcome of an election where millions are casting ballots by mail, Whitacre is optimistic. “I think we will have a pretty good idea on election night, but definitely by the end of the week [Nov. 7], we will know,” he predicts.
Early voting continues in Allegany County through Nov. 2 from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily, including Saturday and Sunday. On Election Day, the Office of Civic Engagement at FSU is planning shuttle services to Mountain Ridge High School where students can drop off mail-in ballots to a secure ballot box or cast their ballot in person.
