Eliminate The Hate
Prejudice is a topic that we all despise. For those who maybe unaware, prejudice is a fixed opinion that is not based upon reasonable facts. On March 6, 2019, Pi Lambda Phi, Delta Zeta, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. teamed up to host an event that they called If You Really Knew Me to discuss the issue. The event was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Lane University Center ARMAH.
The forum gave attendees the opportunity to discuss what they think prejudice means and gave them a safe environment to share stories of when they may have experienced prejudices. This event was like no other, although many have tried in the past to host forums based around this topic. However, those forums were merely discussions. This event gave attendees the opportunity to not only share stories, but it also included activities to get them moving and comfortable with their fellow Bobcats.
The organizations decided to begin the event with an icebreaker activity. The icebreaker helped the bobcats figure out things that they have in common with one another. The biggest activity was something the hosts called the “Privilege Walk.” This walk demonstrated to the students that not everyone had the same upbringing. An activity of such stature can have a very positive impact on the participants. The world is full of people from different upbringings, and not everyone realizes that. FSU is a campus full of diversity, so it is important that its students are aware that though we are all different in many ways, we are all human beings and must treat each other as such.
Prejudice being such a heavy topic, it can cause a major change of a room’s energy. To lighten the mood in the room, the organizations decided to include a performance from another FSU Bobcat. Known around campus as “JNino,” the young artist graced the room with a piece that we wrote about prejudice. JNino is not only known for his musical art but is also the President of Creative Minds. Creative Minds is a student organization on campus that focuses on giving students the opportunity to showcase their talent and grown in the music field.
We here at The Bottom Line would like to give thanks to Pi Lambda Phi, Delta Zeta, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. for collaborating to host such an influential event . We would also like to thank those who were able to attend the event. Be sure to keep an eye out for other events that these organizations may have coming up this semester.
