First Acrobatics and Tumbling Meet of The Season
With a delay on the first meet and a crunch for time, Frostburg State’s Acrobatics and Tumbling set out for their first competition at Fairmont State University on Sunday, February 13th.
What was originally scheduled as a tri-meet against Alderson and Broaddus University, the Bobcats faced the kick-off to their 2022 season against previous MEC champions, the Falcons. The first heat set the tone of the meet for both sides including acrobatics, pyramid, toss, and tumbling.
During the first half, the Bobcats scored 86.85, gaining a small lead over the Falcons 86.30. Frostburg was able to show off their skills and gained the most points from their performance in the pyramid segment during the first half. The pyramids had a starting value of 10 points and were all scored at 9.5. Fairmont generated the most points in the compulsory section of the meet, having scores ranging from 8 points to 9.7 points.
The second half of the meet consisted of toss, tumbling, and team. Solos were given to Frostburg’s freshman Mayah Morant, sophomore Abbie Baker, and sophomore Alexis Palmieri who all successfully completed their passes with only 4.35 point deduction compared to Fairmont’s 4.40 point deduction from Alexis Smith and Zara Christophe. With Frostburg only behind by three points, the team event would be the last event of the meet that would be the determining factor for the competition.
Up first with a start value of 100.73, Frostburg scored an 85.34 giving them a total of 247.840 points out of a possible 300. Fairmont’s team event had a starting value of 101.82 and was scored an 87.52 giving them a total of 252.570 points.
With a fairly new team, Frostburg Acrobatics and Tumbling are competing in their second year with being ranked 15th in the nation by second-year head coach Katie Nunley. With only a three-point difference against the 2019 and 2021 MEC champions, Frostburg has a strong chance of being a finalist in the MEC tournament. They compete against Fairmont later in the season which will go towards their overall record and help determine which teams make it past the regularly scheduled season.
The Acrobatics and Tumbling team will have their next competition next Saturday, February 19th against Stevenson University at 10 A.M.
