Frostburg Arts Walk Ushers in Spring

Local Artists to be Showcased in Upcoming Walking Gallery Tour

As the weather warms up and the sun begins to banish the last remains of bitter cold and snow, spring has finally arrived and with it comes the Frostburg Arts Walk.

On Saturday, April 23, 2016, the Frostburg Arts Walk will take place on Main Street and surrounding venues from 3 pm-8 pm, where the works of over 40 artists, using a wide array of mediums, will be showcased along with live demonstrations and musical performances.

Galleries will be set up in over twenty-five participating businesses, as well as the St. Michael’s Courtyard, Broadway Lot, City Place, and the public library.

Featured types of art will include everything from porcelain and clay pottery, professional and landscape photography, oil, acrylics, and watercolor paintings, hand crafted soaps and body products, handmade jewelry and other wearable works of art, metal work, woodworks, stained glass, detailed stippling, paper filigree, pins-striping, fused glass, mixed medium works, and many more. These works will be available to browse as well as purchase throughout the day.

“Arts Walk is a great time to show off all of the amazing talents living here in Western Maryland,” said Jessica Palumbo, FrostburgFirst’s Main Street Manager, “It’s great to see our downtown come so alive with arts.”

Demonstrations scheduled include a live chainsaw woodcarving in the Broadway Lot and fiber demos of knitting, spinning, and weaving techniques.

Live music will range from band performances to solo and duo acts of various genres, including a performance from the local high school jazz ensemble and a street-side dance routine from the Mountain City Center for the Arts.

With everything from adult coloring, face painting, kids’ crafts, and raffles, this walking gallery tour of Frostburg’s Arts and Entertainment District will offer something for every attendee at any age to enjoy for an afternoon of creative and artistic entertainment.

As the afternoon turns to evening, the local restaurants lining Main Street and its surrounding areas provide an eclectic range of dining options, as more band performances will be showcased at local bars after Arts Walk hours.

The event will showcase the works of Frostburg State University students as well as town locals and is a collaboration between the community and businesses. The event is organized by FrostburgFirst, a growing Main Street Maryland program, and is the first of many events FrostburgFirst hopes to promote. FrostburgFirst also plans to partner with SGA to help create more Main Street events that will help orient and familiarize students with what the community has to offer.

“We’ve been working with SGA to plan an event called Taste of Frostburg to get students acquainted with local businesses and eateries,” said Palumbo. “The students have been great to work with; they are full of ideas and enthusiasm with this project.”

With galleries, musical performances, demonstrations, public art displays, crafts, raffles, dining, and shopping, the day is set to be an exciting event.
