Frostburg Falls to Marymount in CAC opener
Frostburg Sate Volleyball suffered an upsetting loss in their league opener in five sets. Before the loss Frostburg had a promising winning streak over the last few matches. Frostburg dominated the FSU tournament and has had a promising winning spell since.
Frostburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead and appeared to be on its way to a win in its Capital Athletic Conference opener, Wednesday night. However, Marymount rebounded and won the final three games to earn a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Bobcats.
Marymount improved its record to 17-5 overall, while FSU fell to 8-10 overall.
Frostburg set the tone early with a .630 hitting percentage in the first set for a 25-16 win. In the second, the Bobcats used an early 7-3 run for take a 13-7 edge and later extended their lead to 22-11 before winning 25-19.
Marymount battled back and captured game three, 25-22. Frostburg led for much of the set, but the Saints captured their first lead of game three 20-19 and scored three of the final four points for the win.
In set four, Frostburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and later held a 10-8 advantage. Marymount knotted the contest at 11-11 and slowly inched its way to a 20-14 lead, before earning a 25-17 win.
In the fifth set, Marymount hit .474 with 11 kills to earn a 15-6 win and close out the match.
Senior Morgan Hoover hit .474 with nine kills and three total blocks, while junior Aimee Petrides posted a team-high 16 kills. Freshman Naya Cheatem finished with 13 kills, six digs and three blocks.
Freshman Lindsey Scepura posted 20 digs, her third effort with 20 or more in the last four matches. Freshman Madelyn Torres tied a season high with 43 assists and finished with her fifth double-double of the season after adding 11 digs.
Frostburg State returned to action defeating Pitt-Bradford, 3-1, Friday night to open the Blue Devil Invitational after falling to Buffalo State, 3-2.
The Bobcats (9-11) opened the weekend with a 3-2 loss to Buffalo State by set scores of 25-27, 25-19, 25-22, 16-25, 13-15. Junior Aimee Petrides led the Bobcat attack with 16 kills while senior Morgan Hoover and freshman Naya Cheatem were close behind with 13 each.
Freshman Lindsey Scepura posted a career-high 30 digs in the five sets. Classmate Madelyn Torres dished out 40 assists for the Bobcats.
Frostburg State rebounded in the second match of the night to defeat Pitt-Bradford in four sets, 3-1. The Bobcats won by set score of 25-12, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22. Once again, Petrides led the offense with 13 kills while Scepura added 22 digs and Torres handed out 35 assists in the three sets.
Petrides closed out the first day of the Blue Devil Invitational with 29 kills. Torres goes into the second day with 75 assists so far and Scepura posted 52 digs.
Frostburg State returns to action when the Bobcats take on host Fredonia at 11:00 am tomorrow and Hilbert at 1:00 pm.
