Frostburg Field Hockey Loses Season Opener

On Thursday, Sept. 5th, the Frostburg State University Bobcats officially began their first NCAA Division II season when the field hockey team faced off against Saint Thomas Aquinas at 3:00 PM.

The season opener was highlighted by valiant efforts from both teams. In the first half, each team was able to score a goal on the opposing keepers very early into the game. Aquinas came out of the gate fast and within three minutes into the half Briannah Thorne put the Spartans ahead. Soon after, the Bobcats bounced back as senior, Logan Gladden, and junior, Gabby Rachuba, were able to pair up and score the only goal against goal keeper Suzzanne Clark.  The score would be tied up 1-1 before entering the second half.

During the second half, Aquinas was able to put together another goal against Frostburg. Gladden and Rachuba continued with numerous shots throughout the game while Clark would finish with a total of four saves for the Spartans. Frostburg’s own Sierra Smizer earned herself a well deserved four saves. The Spartans would find themselves ahead for the remaining minutes leaving the Bobcats just short with a final score of 2-1.

Frostburg was able to maintain an aggressive offensive game for the duration of playtime. There was a total of 22 shots in the game, 12 for the Bobcats and 10 for the Spartans. Gladden and Rachuba led the team with five shots each. First-year Taylor Henderson and sophomore Rylee Johnson also had attempts at the goal.

Frostburg will be on the road for their next four games. They will go against Indiana P.A. Crimson Hawks on Saturday, Sept 7th before traveling to Slippery Rock University on Tuesday, Sept. 10th. It will not be until Saturday, September 21st that the team will return to their home turf against the Coker College Cobras at 5:00 PM.
