Frostburg Football Dashes Past West Virginia Wesleyan for Fifth Consecutive Win
Saturday was a battle of the Bobcats as the Frostburg State University Bobcats traveled to play West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats in Buckhannon, West Virginia. Frostburg dominated on both sides of the ball en route to a statement 35-13 win. This is the fifth consecutive win for FSU after an 0-1 start. Their 5-1 record is tied for the second-best in the Mountain East Conference (MEC).
Frostburg’s offense operated smoothly throughout the game, scoring a touchdown in each of the first three quarters, and doubling down with two in the fourth. Will Brunson continues to be the leader of this offensive unit for FSU and had another strong showing on Saturday. The graduate transfer quarterback spread the ball around effectively, connecting on passes to 7 different receivers on his 14 completions. His three touchdown passes were to three different receivers as well.
However, the stars of the game for Frostburg were on the defense. The FSU defense dominated in the trenches and brought down quarterback Jarrett Northrop for a season-high nine sacks. Juniors Trevor Booker and Carl Igweh each had three sacks. Junior linebacker Jake Broschart was Frostburg’s leader in tackles on Saturday with eight and gave some insight into FSU’s success both in this game and this season that has been a surprise for many outside the FSU locker room.
When asked if the team expected to have this much success coming into this season, Jake maintained that this team that has won two conference championships in his tenure at FSU, was never shaken by this season’s move to Division II; “I think we knew that it was very possible to be successful coming into the Mountain East Conference, but it was going to take everything we had to win games at the Division II level. I wouldn’t say we didn’t expect to have this much success because of the amount of work we put in leading up to this season.”
He pointed to great team chemistry and coaching as the keys to Frostburg’s success and admits Frostburg is a stubborn bunch. He says, “We leave it all out there and fight non-stop from the opening kickoff till the last whistle blows.” These factors have helped Frostburg have success in recent seasons and win five of their first six games to begin this season.
Next up for FSU is a primetime home game against Charleston (4-2), who is coming off a tough 63-53 loss against conference-leading Notre Dame (Ohio). The game is on Thursday, Oct. 17th, at 7 p.m. in Bobcat Stadium. The game will be televised live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), and at 9 p.m. on AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh.
