Frostburg Greeks Step for a Cause
Frostburg’s Greek Life came together this week for the annual Greek Week. The theme this year is “Game of Thrones” with green team as the Bartheon family, blue team as the Stark family, and red team as the Lannister family. One of the biggest events of the week, So You Think You Can Step, took place Thursday, April 23. Jamie Winters, the assistant director of student activities and Greek life, came out dressed head to toe as Daenerys from “Game of Thrones.” Winters introduced the host of the evening, Johnathon Archer, who is the vice president of programming for Greek Council. DJ Six9, a member of Iota Phi Theta, assisted with the music for all of the performances.
The green team, consisting of Alpha Sigma Tau, Phi Mu Delta, Delta Sigma Pi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta and Phi Mu Alpha, kicked off the night with their step performance. The Bartheons mixed the “Game of Thrones” theme song with popular songs like “Trap Queen,” “Flicka Da Wrist” and “Truffle Butter.” Following their performance, their take on the Mountain Dew Kickstarter commercial played, showing members of several organizations dancing around campus.
The blue team, consisting of Delta Zeta, Alpha Phi Omega, Pi Lambda Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Pi and Kappa Alpha Psi, hit the stage next. Two members of the Iotas were acting as instructors who were putting their “recruits” through their final test. Most of the performance was focused on stepping without music, however “Slum Anthem” was featured during their performance. The Starks’ take on the Mountain Dew Kickstarter commercial was similar to the original commercial.
The final performance was by the red team, consisting of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Delta Rho, Delta Omicron, Phi Beta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Iota. Their performance started with a bit of live action roleplaying that led into a step performance featuring songs like “Slow Motion,” “Hate Bein Sober” and “Lannisters Anthem.” The Lannisters’ take on the Mountain Dew Kickstarter commercial showed the difference between life before and after a drink of “Greek Starter” was taken.
After the intermission, the Greek God and Goddess for each team were interviewed and performed their talent. The Goddess for the green team is Cecylia Morrison, a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, and the God is Jacob McDonald, a member of Phi Mu Delta. When asked why they are the king and queen of campus, Morrison responded, “We don’t just watch the ‘Game of Thrones,’ we live the ‘Game of Thrones.'” Their talent consisted of synchronized swimming using a sheet as water and a rap of “Party” by Aaron Carter with remixed lyrics done by the God and Goddess. The blue team followed with Goddess Alyssa Scott, a member of Alpha Phi Omega, and God Kevin Keh, a member of Pi Lambda Phi. Scott stated, “We’re the best, we’re always going to be the best” when asked why they are the king and queen of campus. Their talent consisted of a choreographed dance to “Uptown Funk.” Red team’s Goddess, Jessica Warren, a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, and God, Brian Hall, a member of Kappa Delta Rho, finished up the night. Warren stated, “We may be the smallest, but we have the biggest hearts” when asked why the two are the king and queen of campus. Their talent was a take on a dance and sign language performance seen in the movie “Napoleon Dynamite.”
The winners have yet to be announced, but currently blue team leads Greek Week with green team in second place and red team in third. All of the proceeds from the step show were donated to Relay for Life. Relay for Life will officially wrap up the 2015 Greek Week.
