Frostburg Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 6 Cabrini

Coming off two straight losses to Washington College and McDaniel, Frostburg State Men’s Lacrosse (2-4) was not going to have an easy task of beating No. 6 Cabrini (4-0), a non-conference opponent, and they couldn’t quite do that as the Cavaliers won 11-6 Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

Cabrini opened with Jordan Krug scoring 1:12 into the contest to put the Cavs up 1-0. Ty Kostack added on to the lead to make it 2-0.

But the Bobcats also came to play. Senior captain Keegan Colegrove and sophomore attackman Jimmy Lucas scored goals to tie things up 2-2, which followed up with sophomore Michael Sipes going from behind the net to the side and firing one home to give FSU a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

However, Krug answered with his second goal of the game to tie things up at 3-3. Then, Jake Klein scored the go-ahead goal as he fell near the net to give the Cavaliers the 4-3 lead.

This continued to be a back-and-forth affair when Frostburg tied it up again on a goal scored by sophomore attackman Paul Ruppert. But Cabrini answered back when Timmy Brooks sniped one past sophomore keeper Jack Marks for the 5-4 lead.

Sean Wagner added on to Cabrini’s lead with a goal as the Cavaliers led the Bobcats 6-4 at halftime.

The Bobcats kept the game close in the middle of the third quarter when sophomore midfielder Justin Carroll was able to score in front of the net and cut the deficit to 6-5.

But the game was no longer close as the Cavaliers answered late in the third with four consecutive goals scored by Brooks, Krug, Riley Michaels, and Zack Gregory to make it a 10-5 lead.

Ruppert found the net on a man-up goal that cut the deficit to 10-6, but it was too late. Brooks scored yet again late in the fourth to make the final score 11-6.

Despite the loss, Marks tied a career-best with 14 saves. FSU won 11-of-19 faceoffs, as junior Drew Mash won 5-of-9. Ruppert led Frostburg with two goals.

For the Cavaliers, two players, Krug and Brooks, finished the contest with hat tricks. Brooks also had two assists. Cabrini outshot Frostburg 38-29.

“We’re 2-4 but we play a very challenging schedule,” Head Coach Tommy Pearce stated. “Playing the non-conference opponents that we do will prepare us to compete better in conference play, which is right around the corner.”

Frostburg will return to action on the road this Wednesday as they face Messiah at 7 p.m.
