Frostburg Men’s Soccer Continue Conference Play

The Frostburg State men’s soccer team continued their conference play on Sunday, Sept. 15that West Liberty University and came out on top with a 3-0 victory. In the first half, the Bobcats outshot their opponents 5-0 with senior midfielder Alla Tesfu and sophomore Kaps Kapende both registering a shot on goal. Junior midfielder Randy Putnam found the back of the net first, scoring off a pass from first-year midfielder Tamino Brown in the 35thminute. About a minute later, Brown had a goal of his own to put the Bobcats up 2-0. With 5 minutes left in the first half, West Liberty committed a foul inside their 18-yard box, awarding Frostburg a penalty kick. Junior forward Robert Riffle was selected to take the kick and put the ball away to give Frostburg a 3-0 lead going into half time.

The second half didn’t see much action as both teams only registered two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Joel Assal made two saves during the game to mark his second shutout of the season.

The men’s soccer team played their first conference home match on Wednesday, Sept. 18th against Urbana College from Ohio. The Bobcats went into halftime holding a 1-0 lead from a goal scored by Putnam after  Brown chased down the ball to the end line and played a pass back to Putnam at the top of the six-yard box.

In the beginning of the second half, Urbana was able to tie the game in the 49thminute after a shot was placed in the top of the goal. Frostburg then accidentally knocked a ball into the back of their own net to give Urbana a 2-1 lead. Urbana outshot the Bobcats 15-11 but the Bobcats placed more shots on goal, leading 8-4. Assal registered 3 saves during the match to keep the Bobcats in the game. Unfortunately, after a hard-fought match, the Bobcats were not able to regain the lead.

Frostburg, now 1-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Mountain East, hosts Wheeling University at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21st at Bobcat Stadium.
