Frostburg State’s Swim Finishes Strong in Championship Meet

This past week, Frostburg State’s Swim team would travel to Canton, Ohio to compete in the GMAC/MEC Championships. There were four days of action stretching from Wednesday, Feb. 12th through Feb. 15th.

On the first day of competition, the men’s team put in a solid showing. Anthony Giuseppetti, James Harmon, Quincy Page, Luke Russell earned All-MEC honors for their performance in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing sixth out of nine teams with a final time of (1:37.26).

The women’s team ranked 10th and the men sat in 8th at the end of day one. The women’s team advanced one swimmer from the preliminary round, while the men’s team advanced two.

Gabby Thompson finished 22nd in the 200 yard IM  with a time of 2:24.01. Maya Wilson led her squad in the 1,000-yard relay with a time of 11:58.52, and Rayna Cicen, Haley Benedicts, Aubree Morris, Megan Culbertson combined for an eighth place in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.11.

On the second day of action, the men’s swim team finished in the top three of three events.
Brady Peterson, Quincy Page, Luke Russell, and Anthony Giuseppetti combined for the second top-three finish among MEC teams in the conference championships in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.14.
Giuseppetti had a good showing in the 200-yard freestyle and finished seventh among eight swimmers with a time of 1:43.85. To end the men’s events for the day, Giuseppetti, Harmon, Peterson, and Russell placed sixth in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:35.75.

For the Women’s squad, Cicen, Culbertson, Elizabeth Myers, and Benedictis finished in eighth place in the 400-yard medley. Also, Benedictis, Cicen, Myers, and Morris took ninth place in the 200-yard freestyle. After two days of competition, the women team sat in 10th place.

On the third day of competition, Giuseppetti continued to put up a strong showing by placing second among MEC swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle. Giuseppetti also put in a good effort finishing fourth out of 24 swimmers.

Matthew Costa-Shell added a 21st place showing in the 100-yard backstroke and Peterson came in 15th place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.33). Henderson also finished 18th (2:18.09)

Culbertson finished 19th in the 100-yard breaststroke for the women’s side. Thompson finished 23rd in the 200-yard butterfly, and Maya Wilson, Culbertson, Thompson, and Morris finished 9th in the 800-yard freestyle.

After the third day of competition, the women’s team sat in 10th place out of 13 teams and the men sat in eighth out of nine teams.

On the fourth and final day of the competition, the Bobcats closed out their first Division II championship. The women finished 10th out of 13 teams, and the men finished eighth out of nine teams.

The Bobcats swim team will wait to see if they gain entry into the ECAC Championships next weekend at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
