Frostburg Volleyball Ends Season on 0-3 Slide
The Bobcats volleyball team played their final three games of the regular season this week against conference opponents – Fairmont, Notre Dame (Ohio), and Urbana (Ohio) respectively. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not carry on the momentum of their previous victory over West Virginia Wesleyan and lost all three of these games in straight sets.
Against Fairmont on Tuesday, Nov., 12th the Bobcats lost the three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-21, and 25-20. Despite the outcome of these sets, FSU fought valiantly and had periods of success throughout the match. They seemed to be in a position to turn things around in the third set when they jumped out to a 8-1 lead, but Fairmont went on a 12-3 run to close out FSU. Standout performances came from sophomore Haley Altmeus, who had ten kills and eight digs. First-years Jackie Sterenberg and Edwyna Lainez added nine kills and 26 assists respectively.
Frostburg lost three hard-fought sets to Notre Dame (Ohio) in a game where Frostburg seemed to get stronger throughout the three sets. The lost by scores that got increasingly closer at 25-18, 25-21, and 25-23. In the first set, FSU led 7-1 early but lost the lead. They found themselves down only one point at 18-17 late in the set but got closed out. The third set was the best of the three and was thrilling from start to finish. The set was tied 23-23 late after a back and forth effort by both teams, but the Bobcats couldn’t close the deal. Senior Cori Smothers had ten digs, two assists, and a kill in the game.
Saturday’s game against Urbana was the final game of the season and senior day for FSU volleyball. Frostburg sent off seniors Biamba Tshitenge, Bailey Godlove, Cori Smothers, and Kathryn Lough after four great seasons at FSU. The Bobcats came out on the wrong side of sets that ended with scores of 18-25, 16-25, and 11-25. The seniors for FSU played well despite the outcome with Smothers accounting for 12 digs and an assist, Godlove getting four kills and four digs, Lough collecting four digs and Tshitenge ending her career with four kills and one block.
The Bobcats finished the season with a record of 11-17 and will look to improve in the coming season with a team that is full of youth and experience.
