Frostburg Women’s Soccer Victorious Over McDaniel
The Frostburg State women’s soccer team continues to impress as they improved their record to 6-1-2 after defeating a formidable opponent in McDaniel. Freshman Alyssa Malanik scored the only goal in the contest which came in the 84th minute to led Frostburg to 1-0 victory.
Senior goaltender Katie Smith came up big for the Bobcat’s making five spectacular saves and posting her third shutout of the season. In the first nine games Smith has allowed only four goals; a very impressive statistic. Smith gives a lot of credit to her defense that has played great for her all season thus far. “[Our defense] has been so aggressive” said Smith, “their play has limited the amount of shots I’ve taken.”
Despite the low scoring game, Frostburg’s offense also played well as they threatened to score on multiple occasions. Senior forward Stephanie Fazenbaker had four shots in the match, three of them on goal. Junior midfielder Erin Worthman played excellent as well with three shots, two of them on goal. And of course Malanik’s heroic penalty kick that she buried to propel the Bobcat’s to a 1-0 lead late in the game. Smith spoke very highly of Fazenbaker’s outstanding play. “Steph is our biggest leader on offense” said Smith, “she works her butt off and creates a lot of chances due to her skill and her speed.”
The lady Bobcats early success is no coincidence, but the product of hard work and dedication. “Our success is definitely due to everyone’s willingness to work hard over the summer so that they would be in shape for the preseason” said Smith, “this allowed us to start working on tactics right away instead of wasting practice time on extra conditioning.”
Opponents should be warily of the well-conditioned and skillful Frostburg team as they continue their campaign with a full head of steam.
