Frostburg’s Creative Slam: “A Passionate Symphony”
Creativity is hard, but sharing it is even more difficult. The Creative Slam event held on Friday, Feb. 27 featured primarily song rap singles by student artists and a solid handful of singers to match. With a mic and a dream, each student delivered a performance tallying up a great atmosphere and experience. The colorful lights, good friends, and bravery of those giving a doorway into their minds, artists like David the DJ, RellThePoet, and DJ P3 gave us something to remember.
The money was in the actual on-stage dances, and not speaking figuratively either. When the “Battle of the DJ’s” section started, the side of DJ P3 and his crew came with a flex; bills were lackadaisically flung into the air with no concern of getting them back. The competition may have tried to be about the music, but the on-stage performance added insurmountably to the experience that was expected. The line-up for the battle was between 3 teams: DJ Njinjoh, DJ P3, and David the DJ. The battle ended with DJ P3 at first, David at second, and Njinjoh at third, for good reason. While David had near a decade of explicit experience creating beats, P3 came to please the crowd. A Twitter poll determined the winner, demonstrating that while you can have a good sound, the way your crowd is affected by your music means so much more for their overall enjoyment.
The event was more than your quintessential warranted hyphy-rap, it featured soulfulness by singers. Their performances gave a new flavor to an already tastefully unrefined space. The change in pace was felt by the audience and set a new tone for the time they shared. With an appeal to alternative musical interests, the likes of Madison, Jaliyah, and Amara resonated a new range of emotion unseen in the already passionate symphony.
