FSU Baseball Comes Up Short to Start the Season
The Frostburg State University Baseball team traveled to Cary, North Carolina to play a weekend tripleheader. These were games the FSU baseball team were highly anticipating as they enter the season with a new head coach, new coaching staff additions, and a higher division of competition. The FSU Bobcats took on the East Stroudsburg Warriors, the Assumption Greyhounds, and the Le Moyne Dolphins.
In the first game against East Stroudsburg, the Bobcats struggled mightily, giving up eight runs in three innings. It seemed things could turn around after a great double made by Jared Mouton to have Bret Fogle, Hayden Mclaughlin, and Lucas Nakich score. Frostburg was able to get in reach the bottom of the fourth, with the score being 7-9. It also seemed they were going to be able to capitalize on any mistake made by the Warriors. So, the Warriors didn’t make any mistakes. East Stroudsburg exploded to twenty-two points while Frostburg stayed at seven for the rest of the game.
The second game would be a lot more defensive, as the total amount of points scored by both teams was 10. As the East Stroudsburg game started, the same would happen for the Assumption Greyhounds to a lesser degree. The Greyhounds went up 4-0 quickly at the top of the third inning. The Bobcats once again battled back to cut the lead in half after Mitch Fyffe’s and Andy Iglesias’s runs off of Fogle’s double to right field. FSU tied the game up 4-4 at the bottom of the fifth but quickly lost the lead at the top of the sixth with two runs by Assumption. FSU would go on to lose that game 6-4.
The third game started more evenly compared to the ones before. Frostburg matched points the Le Moyne Dolphins scored and had the lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. After Le Moyne tied the game up in the fifth inning, they would go up to five points in the next. Frostburg made an attempt late, in the seventh inning, after Worthy Hollister and Nick Benitez had run home for scores, but they were still down three. Le Moyne increased the lead by four points and held on to win the game 10-6.
Colby Lee, Ben Vok, and Fogle led the three games in pitching while Mouton, Fogle, and Benitez led in hitting. The fielding leaders of the three games were Bryce Jackson, Iglesias, and Fogle.
The Bobcats’ next game will be on Friday, Feb. 23 against the Clarion Golden Eagles.
