FSU Baseball Finishes with 28-12 Record
Overall, the Frostburg State University (FSU) baseball team had a great season, but they fell short of expectations. The team finished the season with 28 wins and 12 losses. For their conference record, the team was well above .500 with a record of 11-5. The team headed to the CAC tournament with the third best conference record.
Unfortunately, the team did not have much success once the CAC tournament started. In the teams, first matchup the Bobcats went up against the third seeded Christopher Newport. Newport edged out FSU to win the game.
Since the CAC tournament is a double elimination tournament, the Bobcats got a second chance to continue their tournament against the York College Spartans. This would be where the teams championship dreams would come to an end. The Spartans beat the Bobcats with the final score being 5-1.
After winning 27 games, hopes were high for the team so being eliminated early in the tournament is a bit disappointing. However, the team had a great seasons with more than a few players standing out among the CAC crowd.
Ricky Castro turned in a tremendous season. Castro led the entire CAC with a dominant .459 batting average. Castro also finished the season with 25 RBIs.
Zach Weiss also finished with a high batting average, with a .399 average. Weiss lead the team in three separate categories this season. His 163 at bats was higher than everyone else in the team and his 65 hits made him a force to be reckoned with when he was at the plate. The last category Weiss dominated this season was runs. His 40 runs not only lead the team but put him 5th overall in the CAC.
Kam Stewart was just behind Weiss in many of the categories that Weiss lead this season. Stewart had 39 runs this season and 42 hits.
Pitching was one of the team’s strong points this season. Kenny Georguis had seven wins to finish the season as well, a team low 1.48 ERA. The seven wins Georguis gained on the season placed him second in the CAC overall. The Bobcats’ other standout pitcher this season was Austin Poretz. Poretz was just behind Georguis, with six wins. Between the two of them, they only lost three games all season. Both Georguis and Poretz had a high number strikeouts this season. With 56 and 53 total strikeouts for the season, both Georguis and Poretz placed in the top ten for the CAC.
For next season, the team will need to improve their finish. They started strong and put up an impressive record both in the conference and overall, but started to falter toward the end. Expect to see this team put up another impressive win total next season, as well as an appearance for them in the tournament.
