FSU Baseball Starts Season with Win Streak

After inclement weather caused the Bobcats to cancel their season opener against Roanoke College, the baseball team traveled to Thomasville, N.C. for a pair of double headers against Old Westbury. Frostburg State University (FSU) took four wins against the Panthers.

After their first weekend, the team traveled to Fayetteville, N.C. for the Bobcat Invitational tournament. FSU won 7-5 over Pitt-Greensburg to start the tournament.

Leading the way for the Bobcats is first baseman Ricky Brady, who has scored five runs and a team leading eight RBIs. He has also sent two pitches out of the park. His 11 hits and 1.353 slugging percentage lead the team. Defensively, he has made no errors and has a perfect fielding percentage. Brady leads the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in RBIs, batting average (.647), and on base percentage (.700).

Right behind Brady is outfielder Rob Jennings, who has a CAC second best seven RBIs. Scoring seven runs, he has been a key contributor on offense. Center fielder Kevin Kean and catcher Dylan Shupe have also seen success, scoring a combined ten runs and eight RBIs.

Junior Kam Stewart, an infielder, is in his first season as a Bobcat after transferring from Chesapeake College. He has seen immediate success at FSU, scoring eight runs and recording a .455 on base percentage.

FSU’s pitchers have also played well, especially senior RHP Kenny Georgius. In two starts, he has won two games and allowed just four runs. Striking out a CAC best 13 batters, Georgius has been a dominant force on the mound. Ryan Redinger, Austin Poretz, and Ryan Callahan have also started games and won. In addition to his duties behind the plate, Shupe is a closer for FSU, and he has one save on the season. Kyle McCormack, another closer, has recorded a save as well.

FSU’s baseball team is loaded with talent, and they are poised to take the CAC by storm. The Bobcats have started the season with five consecutive victories, and they are well on their way to dominating the CAC. However, they have not yet competed against a CAC rival. They will visit the 2013 CAC champion Salisbury Seagulls for a double header on Feb. 8 for their first conference matchup. FSU and Salisbury have enjoyed a constant back and forth in recent seasons, and the season’s outcome will likely be determined by this rivalry.

Following the Bobcat Invitational, FSU will travel to Southern Virginia on Feb. 5 and Washington College on Feb. 7.
