FSU Beats Kentucky Wesleyan on Senior Day to Improve to 8-2

Saturday, Nov. 9th marked the final home football game for Frostburg State University (FSU). This meant saying goodbye to a class of seniors that has fueled the winningest era in Frostburg’s history. In the four seasons since much of this senior class stepped on the field for FSU, the Bobcats have gone 38-6, won three consecutive conference championships, and had two playoff appearances.

After the senior day festivities concluded, the rest of the Bobcats honored their decorated seniors with their 39th win in a crucial victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. The Bobcats had a slow start to the game. In the first half, FSU scored only one touchdown and was clinging to a 7-6 lead. The offense started clicking in the second half as FSU scored 21 points and extended its lead to 28-19 entering the fourth quarter. Each team would score once more ending the game with a final score of 35-25. The Bobcats now are 8-2 on the season.

Saturday’s win saw career-best performances from players on both sides of the ball. Running back Gavin Lavat had a career-high 145 yards to put him over the 1000 yard mark. Lavat also added 2 rushing touchdowns, giving him 10 on the season. Junior receiver Terrell Brown had a career day as well with 113 yards receiving on six catches.

On the defensive side of the ball, the play of the day came from senior defensive back Vincent Persichetti. Vinny, as he’s known around campus capped off a successful senior game with a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Vinny didn’t hold back when asked how big that play was for him.

“I’ve had a couple opportunities over my four years playing here and came up short, so to finally do it on my senior day was a great feeling,” he said.

The atmosphere in Bobcat Stadium was electric for Saturday’s game, a feeling Vinny admitted will be the thing he misses the most about playing for FSU. The statement “every time we play here it’s a great atmosphere, and there isn’t many like the one we have” is high praise from a player who has been played at colleges across the country at both the Division II and Division III levels for FSU. Bobcat Stadium is truly a special place to play, and has given the Bobcats a true home-field advantage over the last four years and beyond.

The Bobcats will play their final game of the season on the road in Glenville, WV to face off against the Pioneers (6-4). Next week’s game should prove to be a tough test for the Bobcats since Glenville is coming off a huge upset over top-ranked Notre Dame, the team that beat FSU just a week prior. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and can be streamed on frostburgsports.com at kickoff.
