FSU Dominates Charleston and Continues Win Streak
On Oct. 17, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Bobcats hosted the Charleston Golden Eagles. A Thursday night prime time game they were motivated for to beat a good Golden Eagle team.
In Thursday night’s game against Charleston, the FSU fans, weather, and football team all made it clear whose home this was. FSU had completely dominated Charleston, annihilating every chance of them winning each time an opportunity was presented.
In a cold and windy game, Gavin Lavat played a huge role on the ground with a total of 30 carries and 146 rushing yards. Frostburg received the kickoff to start the game and immediately set the tone with an 11 play drive, going 60 yards to score an opening drive touchdown. Knowing the winds were going to be swirling, it was up to Lavat to carry the offensive load. His number was called seven of the eleven plays on the first drive, then capped it off with a two-yard touchdown run. A few drives later, with Charleston on offense, Zach Strand made a great defensive play, stripping the quarterback of the ball, recovering, and running it in for a touchdown to give his team a 14 point lead. A drive later, on Charleston’s own thirty yard line, linebacker Trevor Booker received picks off the quarterback and set his offense up in beautiful field position for Lavat to pound in another touchdown. FSU pulled a trick out of their sleeve on the kickoff, surprisingly completing an onside kick and repossessing the football, once again in the red zone. Another touchdown was rushed in by Lavat putting the Bobcats up 28-0.
It can’t be understated how well the FSU defense performed against the Golden Eagles. The defense rarely ever let Charleston on their side of the field, and the one time they had an opportunity at getting points on the board, the opportunity was blown by a missed field goal.
In the second half, it was a lot of the same thing as before, but with a little less scoring from the Frostburg offense due to them just trying to conserve the lead. Late in the third-quarter where, in four plays, the Golden Eagles threw their way to their first score on a 24-yard touchdown. This must have woken the Bobcats up again because the next drive, Will Brunson threw a great pass to Lincoln Ikwubuo for a 27 yard TD. Some drives later, capping off the victory was Aizsha Horne with a one-yard touch down late in the final quarter.
The leaders of this game were Brunson, throwing for 128 yards on eight attempts and a touchdown, Lavat rushing for nearly 150 yards on 30 carries, with 3 touchdowns, and Ikwubuo receiving four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Wayne Palmer led the defense side of the team, gaining nine tackles.
The Bobcats travel to play against Wheeling University on Oct. 26 with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
