FSU Field Hockey Enduring a Losing Streak
Frostburg State University’s field hockey team is currently enduring a losing streak. The team has lost their last 5 games and the final scores of the games haven’t been close. Since soundly beating Bethany in late September, the team has scored only four goals in 5 games. In the games against Bridgewater, St. Marys, and Shenandoah the final score for each was 1-4. No. 1 ranked Salisbury handed the team their worst defeat of the season when they shut the Bobcats out 0-5. This is a bit unexpected since just before this losing streak the team was riding a 3 game winning streak.
Both offensively and defensively the team just seems out of sync. There has been great performances by individual players in the games, but it hasn’t been enough to rally the team to a win. In the team’s last game junior Jacqueline Gover did her best Tim Howard impersonation. She totaled up 24 saves which is now her career best. The number of saves is outstanding, but she’s been doing this all season. Gover has made a new career best in saves a total of 5 times this season.
Gover shouldn’t have to make performances like that on the regular basis. The team’s defense needs to step it up. The team’s defense has allowed a total of 20 goals over the past five games. They don’t have the fire power on the offensive side to let games end up in a shootout. Getting the number of goals down for the opponent should be the teams focus and that will hopefully jump start the offense which is also playing just as bad as the defense. Four offensive goals over five games isn’t going to cut it. There are only four games left in the season and with a record of 5-9 playoff hopes for the team have vanished. At best the team can win out and finish with an even 9-9 record.
Their next game is Sunday, October, 19 against Wesley.
