FSU Football Captures Historic First Division II Victory

Frostburg State University avenged last week’s heartbreaking season-opening loss to West Virginia State University with a dominant 52-14 win over Concord University on Saturday in Mountain East play. The win is FSU’s first of the season and first as a Division II program. The Bobcats have not put up 52 points on the scoreboard on the road since defeating William Paterson University in the 2017 season.

Junior running back Gavin Lavat seems like he’s going to be a workhorse for the Bobcats offense this season. After a strong performance in last week’s game, FSU offensive coordinator J.C. McDonald made sure to feed Lavat early and often on his way to a pair of first-quarter touchdowns that gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead in the game’s opening period.

Concord would score two touchdowns of their own in the second quarter bringing the score to 21-14 going into halftime. Concord was shut out for the rest of the game by a stingy Bobcats defense, that along with the offense took over the game in the third quarter, scoring 24 unanswered points. The defense was lead by senior linebacker Matt Meier and junior defensive lineman Carl Igweh. Each had six tackles, but Igweh was especially disruptive throughout the game with 3.5 tackles for a loss. The Bobcat defense forced Concord to finish with negative yardage on four possessions while forcing a punt on three occasions. However, the highlight of the game for the defense was a 61-yard interception that was returned for a touchdown by senior defensive back Michael Bell.

Quarterback Will Brunson had an efficient day passing, completing 14 of 20 passes for 217 yards and a score. Of his 14 completions, almost half (six) went to junior wide receiver Lincoln Ikwubuo who had lad the Bobcats with 66 yards.

The Bobcats look to take Saturday’s momentum into next week’s game at Bobcat Stadium on Thursday night. FSU (1-1) will face off against West Liberty University (1-1), who will be looking to bounce back after a 43-24 loss to one of the country’s more elite teams: #4 Notre Dame (Ohio). Kickoff for Thursday’s game is set for 7 p.m.
