FSU Football Loses Heartbreaker against UNC Pembroke

On Thursday, September 29, the Frostburg State University Men’s Football team traveled to Pembroke, North Carolina to take on UNC Pembroke. Frostburg, who lost a close game against Concord last week, started off slow. The Bobcats (FSU) elected to receive the ball first but could not get their offense going as their first possession ended in four plays and lasted just under two minutes.

The Braves’ (UNC) first possession lasted just over eight minutes resulting in a field goal putting the Braves up 3-0.

Frostburg continued to rely on their running game, unfortunately, no gains were made; they punted on their next two possessions.

Already up 3-0 the Braves were ready to put some more points on the board, another long drive led the Braves to Frostburg’s 10-yard line. Josh Jones the QB for the Braves ran it in to extend the lead to 10 points.

Frostburg answered quickly by completing a 50-yard pass to WR Cole Porter putting them 25 yards away from scoring. One timeout and five plays later Frostburg’s Jordan Marcucci caught a six-yard pass from QB Isaiah Lester resulting in a touchdown to make the score 10-7.

At the start of the third quarter, the Bobcats put together an impressive drive that got them on UNC’s 2-yard line. With a 4th and goal on the 2-yard line, first-year head coach Eric Wagoner made the decision to try and score a touchdown instead of tying the game. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, that decision did not pay off; they were stopped at the one-yard line.

With the Braves (UNC) on their own 1-yard line, the Bobcat’s defense was ready to go. On the second play, Frostburg’s Delonta Butler tackled UNC’s RB JaQuan Kelly in the endzone for a safety. UNC lead 10-9.

Frostburg and UNC went back and forth with their possessions not scoring at all. UNC’s last possession was another long one, lasting just over nine minutes. UNC’s Alex Alvarado missed a 36-yard field goal which gave Frostburg just under two minutes to win the game.

With 1 minute and 58 seconds left, Frostburg’s QB Isaiah Lester put together a string of short throws and runs that got the Bobcats on UNC’s 30-yard line with four seconds to go. Frostburg State kicker Dayne Koontz attempted a 47-yard field goal which fell short and ends the game with UNC Pembroke winning at home 10-9.

Frostburg’s next game is against Notre Dame College (Ohio) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Frostburg is now 0-2 in their last two games heading into their homecoming week against Notre Dame who have won their last three games. This should be a tough matchup for the Bobcats who haven’t beaten Notre Dame in the last three years they have played.
